Ajinkya Rahane Urges India to Back Kuldeep Yadav After Tough Sri Lanka Test

Ajinkya Rahane has thrown his support behind Kuldeep Yadav after the Indian wrist-spinner endured a difficult outing in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle. Kuldeep managed only one wicket across the match and conceded 103 runs from 25 overs.

While young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar grabbed the spotlight with a remarkable 10-wicket haul, Rahane believes India should continue backing Kuldeep, particularly if similar spin-friendly conditions are expected in the second Test.

Ajinkya Rahane Wants India to Give Kuldeep Yadav More Confidence

Kuldeep Yadav struggled to find his usual rhythm during the opening Test. He was not used extensively despite Sri Lanka batting twice, and his overall figures did not reflect the match-winning impact he has produced for India in the past.

Rahane, however, believes a single difficult match should not affect the team’s faith in the experienced spinner. He stressed that Kuldeep has repeatedly delivered wickets in important situations and needs confidence from his teammates and management.

“I want Kuldeep Yadav to be given more confidence. He needs the team to stand by him at this point,” Rahane said.

The former India batter acknowledged that bowlers can sometimes struggle to find their rhythm and pointed out that Kuldeep’s limited opportunities in the Test may have contributed to his lack of impact.

Rahane also emphasized Kuldeep’s ability to change games, saying that continued backing could help the spinner regain his confidence and deliver when India need him most.

Manav Suthar’s 10-Wicket Haul Steals the Show

While Kuldeep had an underwhelming outing, Manav Suthar produced one of the biggest performances of the Test. The young left-arm spinner claimed 10 wickets, taking four in the first innings and six in the second.

His performance played a crucial role in India’s comprehensive 165-run victory and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Rahane praised Suthar’s bowling and particularly highlighted the confidence he showed from the beginning of the match. The spinner took a wicket with his very first delivery, immediately setting the tone for an impressive performance.

“The thing I liked the most was the wicket he picked on the very first ball. It is important for you as a bowler to hit the right area on the very first ball,” Rahane explained.

Rahane also noticed subtle changes in Suthar’s bowling speed between the two innings. According to him, that showed the youngster was actively thinking about his bowling and looking for ways to improve.

Rahane Advises Suthar to Keep Improving

Despite Suthar’s outstanding 10-wicket performance, Rahane believes the youngster must remain focused on development rather than simply celebrating his success.

The former India batter suggested that Suthar should enjoy the achievement but also analyze his performance and continue working on his bowling.

This approach could be particularly important as opposition teams begin studying Suthar more closely. His ability to make adjustments during matches could become an important part of his development at international level.

Will India Make Changes for the Second Test?

India will travel to Colombo with a 1-0 series advantage, and Rahane believes the playing XI could remain unchanged if the conditions at the Sinhalese Sports Club are similar to those in Galle.

According to Rahane, the biggest factor will be the nature of the pitch. If the surface offers substantial assistance to seam bowling and has grass covering, India could consider changing their combination.

However, if the conditions remain spin-friendly, Rahane sees little reason for India to make changes after such a convincing victory in the opening Test.

“If there are seaming conditions and not a dry wicket, with some grass on it, then maybe there can be one change based on it. But otherwise, I don’t see any changes for the next Test,” Rahane said.

Kuldeep Yadav Could Still Play a Major Role

India’s strong start to the series means Kuldeep Yadav has an opportunity to respond in the second Test. The spinner has already established himself as a match-winning option across formats and has the experience required to bounce back from an ordinary performance.

Rahane’s comments underline an important aspect of team management: experienced players may need support during periods when their performances dip. With India potentially facing another spin-friendly surface in Colombo, Kuldeep could still become a key part of the bowling attack.

At the same time, Suthar’s breakthrough performance gives India another impressive spin option. The challenge for the team will be finding the right combination while maintaining confidence in its established players.

India Take 1-0 Lead Against Sri Lanka

India secured a 165-run victory in the first Test at Galle to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Suthar’s 10 wickets were central to the result, while India’s overall performance gave them a strong platform heading into the second match.

The second Test is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 23, at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. The pitch and conditions will likely determine whether India retain the same XI or make changes to their bowling combination.

For Kuldeep Yadav, the match could provide an immediate opportunity to answer his critics. With Rahane calling for the team to stand behind him, the experienced spinner will hope to rediscover his rhythm and make a bigger impact in Colombo.
