Alexander Zverev began his Cincinnati Open 2026 campaign with a hard-fought victory over Cameron Norrie, overcoming a slow start to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. However, the German’s late-night finish drew an exasperated reaction from Tennis insider Jose Moron.

Zverev entered the tournament looking to bounce back after suffering a first-round defeat to Tallon Griekspoor at the Canadian Open earlier this month. The World No. 3 made a much stronger start in Cincinnati, although he was forced to fight from behind against Norrie.

The unusually late finish prompted tennis insider Jose Moron to question the scheduling at the Masters 1000 event.

“He played two Masters 1000 tournaments, and there’s a possibility of splitting the days so this doesn’t have to happen. Zverev finished his match after 2:15 a.m. in Cincinnati.”

The timing highlights the growing concerns around late-night finishes in professional tennis, particularly at major tournaments where players may have limited recovery time before their next match.

Zverev admits confidence was lacking after Canadian Open exit

The victory was particularly important for Zverev after his disappointing campaign in Canada. The 29-year-old was eliminated in the opening round by Tallon Griekspoor, leaving him searching for confidence heading into Cincinnati.

Speaking during his on-court interview, Zverev explained that his preparation in Cincinnati had been much better and that he needed to rediscover his rhythm after the early defeat in Canada.

“I was practising quite well here, which is very different to Canada,” Zverev said, reflecting on his contrasting experiences at the two tournaments.

He added that his confidence had been affected by the Canadian Open loss but was pleased with the improvement he showed after dropping the opening set against Norrie.

Following his demanding opening-round victory, Zverev will receive a day of rest before returning to action in the Cincinnati Open round of 32.

His next opponent will be Terence Atmane, who advanced after defeating Marton Fucsovics before overcoming 26th seed Tomas Etcheverry.

Zverev will hope the additional recovery time helps him manage the physical demands of his late-night opener and maintain his momentum in Cincinnati.
