Cameron Green Ends 23-Year Wait for Australia With Historic Darwin Test Century

Cameron Green etched his name into Australian cricket history during the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin on Sunday, August 16. The all-rounder produced a remarkable century in the second innings at the Marrara Cricket Ground, ending a 23-year wait for an Australian Test hundred at the venue.

Green reached his century from 192 balls, marking his first Test hundred and becoming only the third Australian batter to achieve the feat in Darwin.

Cameron Green Ends Australia’s 23-Year Wait

Green’s landmark innings brought an end to a long-standing drought for Australian batters in Test Cricket at Darwin. Before his effort against Bangladesh, the last Australian Test centuries at the venue came back in 2003.

Darren Lehmann and Steve Waugh were the only Australian batters to score Test centuries in Darwin before Green’s arrival in the record books. Both achieved the milestone against Bangladesh in July 2003.

Lehmann scored 110 runs, while Waugh remained unbeaten on 100. More than two decades later, Green became the third Australian to reach three figures in a Test at the venue.

Green Registers His Maiden Test Century

The century was also particularly significant for Green personally. The 27-year-old had been waiting for his first Test hundred since making his red-ball debut for Australia against India in December 2020.

His unbeaten century against Bangladesh therefore represents an important milestone in his Test career and could provide significant confidence for the all-rounder going forward.

Green’s innings featured four fours and one six, with the batter showing patience and composure to spend a considerable amount of time at the crease.

Australian Test Centuries in Darwin

Green now joins an exclusive group of Australian batters who have scored Test centuries in Darwin. The list includes some of the country’s most accomplished players.

  • Darren Lehmann: 110 vs Bangladesh, 2003
  • Steve Waugh: 100* vs Bangladesh, 2003
  • Cameron Green: 100* vs Bangladesh, 2026

The fact that all three Australian Test centuries in Darwin have come against Bangladesh adds another interesting detail to Green’s historic achievement.

Green Adds to Darwin’s List of International Centuries

Green’s century also adds another major name to the list of international batters who have reached three figures in Darwin.

South Africa’s Dewald Brevis smashed an unbeaten 125 in a T20I against Australia in 2025, while Australia’s Ricky Ponting scored 101 in an ODI against Bangladesh in 2003.

Bangladesh’s Tanzid Hasan also registered a Test century against Australia during the current series, making Darwin an important venue for landmark performances in the fixture.

Why Cameron Green’s Century Matters for Australia

Green’s century is more than just an individual milestone. As an all-rounder, his ability to contribute heavily with the bat gives Australia an additional option in the middle order.

Producing a long innings in challenging Test conditions against Bangladesh could also strengthen Green’s confidence as Australia continues to build its squad for the next phase of the World Test Championship cycle.

With his maiden Test century now secured, Green will hope this performance becomes the beginning of a productive run with the bat in Australian Test cricket.
