Crystal Palace have had their appeal against Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card rejected, meaning the striker will serve a three-match suspension following his dismissal in Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. The decision leaves Palace without one of their key attacking players for three upcoming domestic fixtures.
Mateta, 29, was sent off in the 13th minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a late challenge on Spurs captain Micky van de Ven. Referee Michael Oliver initially showed the France international a yellow card, but the decision was upgraded to a red following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Crystal Palace challenged the dismissal, seeking to overturn the decision or reduce the punishment. However, an independent regulatory commission rejected the club’s claims, confirming that Mateta will miss matches against Liverpool, Coventry and Hull.
FA Rejects Crystal Palace Appeal Against Mateta Red Card
The Football Association confirmed that Crystal Palace’s appeal against Mateta’s dismissal had been unsuccessful. The club had challenged both the decision to send off the striker and the severity of the resulting punishment.
In its official statement, the FA said:
“An independent regulatory commission has dismissed claims of both wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment in relation to Jean-Philippe Mateta.”
The ruling means the original three-match suspension will remain in place. Palace will therefore have to manage their upcoming fixtures without Mateta, who was dismissed early in the defeat against Tottenham.
Mateta to Miss Matches Against Liverpool, Coventry and Hull
Mateta’s suspension will begin with Crystal Palace’s Premier League home fixture against Liverpool on Sunday. He will also miss the club’s subsequent matches against Coventry and Hull later this month.
The absence of the French forward represents a setback for Palace as they attempt to improve their results. Losing an attacking option for three matches could make an already difficult period more challenging for head coach Pierre Sage.
Palace will need other attacking players to take responsibility during Mateta’s suspension, particularly with the team struggling to find the net in recent Premier League games.
How Mateta Was Sent Off Against Tottenham
The incident occurred just 13 minutes into Saturday’s match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Mateta made a late challenge on Tottenham captain Micky van de Ven, prompting referee Michael Oliver to initially produce a yellow card.
Following a VAR review, Oliver upgraded the punishment to a red card, leaving Crystal Palace with 10 players for most of the contest.
Tottenham went on to secure a 2-0 victory over Palace, continuing their recent improvement in form. The defeat added to the pressure on Sage, whose team have struggled to produce positive results in the league.
Crystal Palace Struggle as Pierre Sage Faces Pressure
Crystal Palace are currently 18th in the Premier League table and have lost their last three league matches. Their recent run has been particularly concerning, with the team conceding nine goals and failing to score in any of those three games.
The poor results have increased scrutiny on head coach Pierre Sage, who is facing pressure as Palace attempt to move away from the relegation zone.
Sage has insisted that he will continue fighting despite the difficult situation. However, the team’s defensive problems and lack of goals have made the coming fixtures increasingly important.
Mateta’s suspension adds another challenge for the manager, who must find a way to improve Palace’s attacking output without one of his leading forwards.
Europa League Fixture Offers Palace Another Opportunity
Before returning to their Premier League campaign, Crystal Palace will face Hoffenheim in the Europa League. The European fixture provides an opportunity for the team to respond after three consecutive domestic defeats.
However, the rejected appeal means Mateta’s domestic suspension remains unchanged. Palace will have to navigate their upcoming league matches against Liverpool, Coventry and Hull without the striker.
With the club sitting 18th in the standings and struggling at both ends of the pitch, Sage faces an important period in his tenure. Crystal Palace will need improved performances and results to ease the pressure, while Mateta’s absence makes the challenge more demanding.
