Dinesh Karthik has been advised to remain with Royal Challengers Bengaluru instead of taking over as Chennai Super Kings’ potential head coach for the 2027 IPL season. Former India batter and IPL winner Subramaniam Badrinath believes Karthik is in an ideal position at RCB after helping the franchise transform into back-to-back champions.

The discussion surrounding Karthik’s future has emerged after CSK parted ways with long-time head coach Stephen Fleming following a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. Former CSK opener Matthew Hayden recently backed Karthik as a possible successor, but Badrinath believes the former wicketkeeper-batter should think carefully before leaving Bengaluru.

Badrinath backs Karthik’s continued RCB association

Karthik has played an important role behind RCB’s recent success as part of their coaching and mentoring setup. The franchise won its maiden IPL title in 2025 during Karthik’s first season with the team in that capacity before successfully defending the trophy in 2026.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Badrinath explained why he would prefer Karthik to continue with RCB rather than accept the CSK position.

“If I were Dinesh Karthik, I would think twice about coming to CSK. He will probably think long and hard, but I think he should stay with RCB. He’s in a good space with RCB. Everything has aligned perfectly there, and all the players are at their peak in RCB. They are in the space where CSK were in the first eight to ten years of the IPL,” Badrinath said.

According to Badrinath, the quality of players available to a coach is ultimately more important than the influence a coach can have individually. He believes RCB already possess the ingredients required to remain successful.

“A coach can only do so much and is limited in the impact he can make on a team. The players on the field are the most important, and that is already present at RCB. On the other hand, CSK will have almost the same players for one more year in this cycle. For this reason, DK should stay with RCB,” he added.

RCB’s remarkable turnaround under Karthik’s influence

RCB’s recent transformation has strengthened the argument for Karthik remaining with the franchise. After years of failing to convert strong campaigns into an IPL championship, Bengaluru finally lifted their first title in 2025.

The franchise then went one step further by winning the IPL again in 2026. Completing consecutive championships placed RCB among the select teams to have achieved back-to-back IPL titles.

Karthik’s association with the team has therefore coincided with one of the most successful periods in RCB’s history. Alongside head coach Andy Flower, he has been credited with contributing to the team’s changing environment and improved performances.

CSK searching for a new head coach after difficult seasons

The situation at CSK is considerably different. The five-time champions won their most recent IPL title in 2023 but have subsequently endured a difficult period, missing the playoffs in each of the following three seasons.

The franchise’s disappointing IPL 2026 campaign eventually resulted in the end of Fleming’s long-standing tenure as head coach. CSK must now identify a successor capable of helping the team rebuild while working with largely the same group of players for another season of the current cycle.

That makes the CSK job an attractive but challenging opportunity for someone like Karthik, who already understands the demands of the IPL and has experience working closely with players and coaching staff.

Badrinath believes RCB will fight to retain Karthik

Badrinath also believes RCB would have little interest in allowing Karthik to leave after two highly successful seasons. With the franchise potentially targeting an unprecedented third consecutive IPL title in 2027, retaining members of the current coaching setup could be a major priority.

“Yes, the CSK role would be more challenging, and life is all about taking up challenges. But DK has already taken up a challenge as he helped build RCB from a tough situation. Now is the time for him to reap the benefits of that. So why would he leave now to take up another challenge? Also, RCB will do whatever it can to keep Dinesh Karthik. I don’t think they’ll let him go easily,” Badrinath said.

Karthik’s strong connection with RCB

Karthik also has a long playing association with RCB. He represented the franchise during two separate periods, first in 2015 and then again from 2022 to 2024.

His transition from player to mentor and batting coach has since given him a different perspective within the franchise. The success of the last two IPL seasons could make his continued presence particularly valuable as RCB attempt to maintain their dominance.

For now, the debate over CSK’s next head coach remains open. While Karthik has emerged as an attractive candidate, Badrinath’s assessment is clear: the former India international should stay in Bengaluru and continue building on the success he has helped create at RCB.
