The FIA’s Formula 1 penalty points system remains an important tool for maintaining driving standards across the grid. Introduced in 2014, the system assigns penalty points for incidents such as causing collisions, dangerous driving, ignoring race procedures, and forcing rivals off the track.
Any driver who accumulates 12 penalty points within a 12-month period receives an automatic one-race suspension. To date, Kevin Magnussen remains the only Formula 1 driver to have crossed that threshold, serving a race ban in 2024.
Following the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix, several drivers remain under pressure as they edge closer to the FIA’s suspension limit.
1. Ollie Bearman – 8 Penalty Points
Haas driver Ollie Bearman currently tops the list with eight active penalty points, making him the driver closest to a race ban.
- 1 point – Change of direction while defending (2025 Abu Dhabi GP) – Expires December 7, 2026
- 1 point – Collision with Liam Lawson (2025 Brazilian GP Sprint) – Expires November 8, 2026
- 4 points – Red flag infringement in pit lane (2025 British GP) – Expires July 5, 2026
- 2 points – Collision with Carlos Sainz (2025 Italian GP) – Expires September 7, 2026
Bearman is just four points away from triggering an automatic race suspension.
2. Lance Stroll – 5 Penalty Points
Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll sits second on the list with five penalty points.
- 1 point – Defensive movement violation (2025 Abu Dhabi GP) – Expires December 7, 2026
- 2 points – Collision with Esteban Ocon (2025 United States Sprint) – Expires October 18, 2026
- 2 points – Forcing another driver off track (2025 Canadian GP) – Expires June 15, 2026
Stroll may soon receive some relief, with two points scheduled to expire shortly after the Canadian Grand Prix anniversary date.
3. Kimi Antonelli – 5 Penalty Points
Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli also carries five penalty points after several incidents during his rookie Formula 1 campaign.
- 2 points – Collision with Charles Leclerc (2025 Dutch GP) – Expires August 31, 2026
- 2 points – Collision with Max Verstappen (2025 Austrian GP) – Expires June 29, 2026
- 1 point – Forcing another driver off track (2025 Italian GP) – Expires September 7, 2026
Although not in immediate danger of a ban, Antonelli will need to avoid further incidents over the coming months.
4. Lewis Hamilton – 3 Penalty Points
Despite recently claiming his first Ferrari victory, Lewis Hamilton remains among the drivers carrying active penalty points.
- 1 point – Collision with Franco Colapinto (2025 Brazilian GP) – Expires November 1, 2026
- 2 points – Failure to slow under yellow flags before the 2025 Dutch GP – Expires August 31, 2026
Hamilton’s total of three points leaves him comfortably below the FIA danger zone.
5. Alex Albon – 3 Penalty Points
Williams driver Alex Albon rounds out the top five with three penalty points on his super licence.
- 1 point – Collision with Lewis Hamilton (2025 Las Vegas GP) – Expires November 23, 2026
- 2 points – Collision with Franco Colapinto (2025 Azerbaijan GP) – Expires September 21, 2026
Albon remains in a relatively safe position but will still be mindful of avoiding further penalties during the remainder of the season.
Who Is Closest to a Suspension?
At present, Ollie Bearman is the only driver within striking distance of the 12-point threshold, carrying eight penalty points. Lance Stroll and Kimi Antonelli follow with five points each, while Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon sit on three.
As the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses, drivers will be hoping older penalties expire before any new incidents push them closer to a race ban.
