The FIA’s Formula 1 penalty points system continues to play a crucial role in maintaining driving standards across the grid. Introduced in 2014, the system awards penalty points for on-track offences, with any driver accumulating 12 points within a 12-month period receiving an automatic one-race suspension.
Following the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix, several drivers remain under scrutiny, while others have successfully cleared older penalties from their records. Haas driver Ollie Bearman currently tops the list with eight penalty points, placing him closest to a potential race ban.
How the F1 Penalty Points System Works
The FIA introduced the penalty points system after concerns about declining driving standards and frequent collisions on track. Under the regulations, penalty points remain active for 12 months from the date they are issued. If a driver reaches 12 points within that period, they receive an automatic one-race suspension.
Kevin Magnussen became the first Formula 1 driver to receive a race ban under this system in 2024.

Bearman Faces Greatest Risk
Ollie Bearman remains the driver under the most pressure, carrying eight penalty points on his FIA Super Licence. The young Briton is just four points away from triggering an automatic race suspension.
Several of Bearman’s points are scheduled to expire later in 2026, but any further incidents before then could put him in danger of becoming the next driver to receive a race ban.
Verstappen and Hamilton See Improvement
Max Verstappen’s penalty tally has dropped to three points after older penalties expired, while seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton currently sits on three points as well.
Both drivers are comfortably below the danger zone, though they will still need to avoid further penalties during the remainder of the season.
Multiple Drivers Hold Clean Records
Several prominent names currently have no active penalty points on their licences, including Lando Norris, George Russell, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas and Nico Hulkenberg.
Maintaining a clean record provides drivers with greater flexibility during intense wheel-to-wheel battles throughout the championship.
Looking Ahead
As the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses, the FIA penalty points table will continue to be closely monitored. While Ollie Bearman remains the closest driver to a suspension, several others, including Kimi Antonelli and Lance Stroll, are also carrying significant totals that could become problematic if further incidents occur.
With every race weekend presenting fresh opportunities for penalties, the battle to avoid accumulating points will remain an important subplot throughout the championship.
