Lewis Hamilton described himself as being “back to his centre” after claiming his first-ever Formula 1 victory with Ferrari at the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix. The historic triumph marked Hamilton’s maiden win for the Italian team since joining ahead of the 2025 season.
The victory was also Hamilton’s first Formula 1 race win since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, ending a lengthy wait and reigniting his championship challenge.
Hamilton Reflects on Emotional Ferrari Breakthrough
Speaking after the race, Hamilton credited months of hard work, preparation and growing confidence within the Ferrari team for helping him achieve the milestone.
The British driver explained that he has focused heavily on improving both physically and mentally while adapting to life at Ferrari.
“I’m just working my way back to my centre. I’ve got great preparation and have trained extremely hard to be here today. There is so much work that I’ve done behind the scenes, and the team has given me confidence by believing in the changes we’ve made together.”
Hamilton added that Ferrari’s willingness to trust his feedback and implement adjustments has helped unlock better performances throughout the season.
Ferrari and Hamilton Finally Deliver
Ferrari’s aggressive race strategy played a crucial role in securing the victory. Hamilton benefited from a perfectly timed Virtual Safety Car period, allowing him to emerge ahead of rivals George Russell and Kimi Antonelli after his final pit stop.
While luck played a part, Hamilton’s pace throughout the weekend demonstrated that Ferrari had the speed to compete at the front.
The seven-time world champion emphasized that he is currently enjoying one of the happiest periods of his career.
“I’m happy in my life and in a really good place. I love what I do. There is no greater feeling than driving a Formula 1 car.”
Special Ferrari Moment for Hamilton
The victory carried extra significance for Hamilton because Ferrari was one of the teams he admired while growing up. He revealed that watching Ferrari dominate Formula 1 during his childhood made winning for the Scuderia an especially meaningful achievement.
Now, after years of competing against Ferrari, Hamilton has finally added his name to the team’s long list of Grand Prix winners.
Title Fight Far From Over
Hamilton’s Barcelona victory also strengthened his position in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship battle. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered a late retirement, allowing Hamilton to close the gap significantly.
Despite the momentum swing, Hamilton remains focused on the long-term challenge ahead.
“There is still a long way to go. Mercedes remains very fast, but we will continue working hard to close the gap. The championship is definitely not over.”
Following the Barcelona Grand Prix, Hamilton sits second in the championship standings and trails Antonelli by 41 points, while extending his advantage over George Russell.
Momentum Building for Ferrari
Hamilton’s breakthrough victory could prove to be a turning point in Ferrari’s 2026 campaign. With confidence growing inside the team and the gap to the championship leader shrinking, Ferrari now appears firmly back in the title conversation.
As the season moves forward, Hamilton will aim to build on the success in Barcelona and continue his pursuit of a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 world championship.
