George Russell Austrian GP mind games controversy became a talking point after the Mercedes driver took a playful swipe at Sky Italy’s interpretation of his team radio message during Formula 1 qualifying.
Russell had delivered a brilliant qualifying performance at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, securing pole position despite yellow flags affecting his final flying lap. After the session, he celebrated over team radio by saying “stai calmo”, which means “stay calm” in Italian.
Russell Explains “Stai Calmo” Radio Message
Sky Italy suggested that Russell’s message was a mind game aimed at rivals, but the Mercedes driver quickly dismissed the idea and explained the real meaning behind the phrase.
Speaking to Sky UK, Russell said:
“Sky Italy think I was trying to play mind games here. But it’s because I spent a lot of time in Italy, and they always said: ‘stai calmo, stai calmo’.”
The Briton added that the team was under pressure during qualifying and the phrase was simply an internal joke rather than a psychological strategy.
“We were really stressed in Q2. But yeah, there were no mind games. In hindsight, I probably should have just said stay calm.”
Russell Converts Pole Into Austrian GP Victory
Russell backed up his qualifying performance by winning Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, holding off strong challenges from Max Verstappen and Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.
The top three drivers finished within two seconds of each other, making it one of the closest battles of the 2026 F1 season.
- Winner: George Russell
- Second: Max Verstappen
- Third: Kimi Antonelli
Russell Proud After Tough Period
After the race, Russell admitted the victory was especially meaningful after a difficult period of the season. He praised Mercedes and highlighted the importance of resilience during challenging races.
Russell said:
“It’s been a tough couple of months with some really tricky races, with races that felt like everything was going against me.”
The Mercedes driver also credited his teammate’s strong performances and said the recent pole positions and race win showed the team’s progress.
Russell Moves Back Into Championship Fight
The Austrian GP victory helped Russell strengthen his position in the drivers’ championship standings. He moved back into second place, overtaking Lewis Hamilton, and now sits 40 points behind teammate Kimi Antonelli.
