Harmanpreet Kaur Retains India Women Captaincy for Asian Games 2026 After T20 World Cup Exit

Harmanpreet Kaur India captain Asian Games 2026 has been confirmed after the Women’s Selection Committee backed the experienced batter to continue leading the national side. The decision comes after India failed to reach the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, which raised questions over Harmanpreet’s future as captain.

Harmanpreet Kaur will lead India’s women’s cricket team at the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. India enter the tournament as defending champions after winning the gold medal in women’s cricket at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

Smriti Mandhana has been named vice-captain, while Shreyanka Patil has also earned a place in the squad, subject to fitness clearance. The squad features a mix of experienced stars and young talents as India look to defend their Asian Games title.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s T20 World Cup Performance

During the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, Harmanpreet scored 141 runs in five matches. Her best performance came against Australia, where she played an aggressive 56-run knock, but India were unable to secure qualification for the knockout stage.

India started the tournament strongly with victories over Pakistan and the Netherlands but suffered setbacks against South Africa and Australia. The defeat against Australia ended India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

Coach Amol Muzumdar Backs Harmanpreet
