New Zealand strengthened their position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings after securing a comprehensive 253-run victory over England in the second Test at The Oval on June 21. The result leveled the three-match series at 1-1 and significantly boosted the Blackcaps’ chances in the WTC race.
After taking a commanding 100-run first-innings lead, New Zealand maintained complete control of the contest. England, led by Joe Root in the absence of suspended captain Ben Stokes, failed to recover despite New Zealand posting 362 runs in their second innings and setting a daunting target.
England’s chase never gained momentum as they slipped to 40/3 before half-centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook briefly offered resistance. However, the hosts collapsed on the final morning and were bowled out for 209, handing New Zealand a memorable away victory.
New Zealand Rise in WTC Standings
The victory marked New Zealand’s first away win of the current WTC cycle and improved their points percentage from 58.33 to 66.67. The Blackcaps climbed into contention near the top of the table, drawing level with Sri Lanka and strengthening their push for a place in the WTC Final.
It was also New Zealand’s first Test victory since the retirement of former captain Kane Williamson and only their third Test win in England since 2000.
England’s WTC Campaign Continues to Struggle
England’s disappointing WTC cycle continued as another defeat pushed their points percentage down from 37.88 to 34.72. The hosts remain seventh in the standings, ahead of only Pakistan and West Indies.
The campaign has been difficult for England, beginning with a drawn home series against India before suffering a heavy 1-4 Ashes defeat in Australia. Although they won the opening Test against New Zealand, the loss at The Oval has once again dented their hopes of reaching a maiden WTC Final.
