India Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign began on a winning note as Harmanpreet Singh’s two goals helped Craig Fulton’s side secure a 3-1 victory over Wales at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen.
Playing on Independence Day, India produced a controlled performance in their Pool D opener. Sanjay Rana opened the scoring before captain Harmanpreet Singh converted two penalty corners to give India a commanding advantage. Sam Welsh scored a late consolation for Wales, but India comfortably held on for all three points.
Sanjay Rana gives India an early lead
Wales created the first dangerous opportunity of the match, forcing Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera into action. However, India quickly settled into the contest and began putting pressure on the Welsh defence.
The breakthrough arrived in the eighth minute when India earned their second penalty corner. With Harmanpreet temporarily off the field, Sanjay Rana took responsibility for the drag-flick and found the back of the net.
The goal was particularly significant for the 25-year-old defender, who was making his first appearance at a Hockey World Cup.
Harmanpreet Singh doubles India’s advantage
India did not have to wait long for their second goal. Harmanpreet returned to the field and immediately showed why he remains one of India’s biggest weapons from penalty corners.
The Indian captain unleashed a powerful drag-flick that beat Wales goalkeeper Toby Reynolds-Cotterill, giving India a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter.
The early advantage allowed India to control the tempo while Wales were forced to defend for long periods.
Wales show greater resistance in second quarter
Wales improved considerably during the second quarter and created their best opportunity of the first half. Jack Pritchard managed to round goalkeeper Mohith HS, who had replaced Karkera, but he could not finish from the difficult angle.
India continued to create opportunities despite Wales’ improved defensive organisation. Abhishek hit the side-netting, while Rajinder Singh narrowly missed the target before the half-time whistle.
India therefore entered the second half with a 2-0 advantage, but Wales remained within striking distance.
Harmanpreet’s second goal puts India in control
The third quarter followed a similar pattern, with India enjoying greater territorial control while Wales maintained a disciplined defensive structure.
India eventually found their third goal after Welsh captain Jacob Draper conceded another penalty corner late in the quarter. Harmanpreet once again stepped up and delivered a clinical drag-flick.
His second goal of the match extended India’s advantage to 3-0 and put the result firmly in India’s favour.
Wales score late consolation goal
India continued to search for a fourth goal in the final quarter, but Wales goalkeeper Reynolds-Cotterill produced an excellent save to deny the hosts’ opponents.
Mohith HS was also forced into action at the other end, making a sharp diving save from a Welsh penalty corner as India looked to protect their three-goal advantage.
Wales eventually got on the scoresheet late in the match. Sam Welsh was awarded the goal following a video review after the ball had crossed the line during a crowded passage of play.
The late strike reduced the margin to 3-1, but India comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure a winning start.
India face England in their next Pool D match
The victory gives India an important start to their Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign as they continue their pursuit of a second men’s World Cup title.
India’s next Pool D challenge will be significantly tougher, with world No. 3 England awaiting them. The match will provide a stronger test of India’s defence, attacking structure and penalty-corner execution.
For now, Harmanpreet Singh’s brace and Sanjay Rana’s memorable World Cup debut have given India plenty of confidence heading into their next fixture.
