India women’s cricket team Olympic qualification has been confirmed for the 2028 Los Angeles Games after the ICC and IOC announced the qualification pathway for cricket’s historic Olympic return.
Cricket will feature at the Olympics for the first time in decades in 2028, with both men’s and women’s T20 competitions scheduled to take place. Six teams will compete in each event, with qualification spots decided through ICC events, rankings, and a global qualifier.
Why India women’s team qualified for LA28 Olympics
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 played a major role in deciding the first Olympic qualifiers. Australia, Great Britain (through England), India, and South Africa secured qualification after finishing as the highest-ranked eligible teams from their respective continents.
Only one team from each continent was allowed an automatic qualification spot, ensuring global representation at the Olympic tournament.
India men’s team qualification status
Unlike the women’s team, India’s men’s cricket team will have to wait until December 2026 to know their Olympic qualification status.
The remaining men’s qualification places will be decided through ICC T20I rankings, with the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania earning places for Los Angeles 2028.
USA’s Olympic qualification condition
The United States, as Olympic hosts, will have the opportunity to qualify directly for both men’s and women’s events if their teams are ranked inside the top 15 of the ICC T20I rankings during the qualification period.
If the USA teams fail to meet the criteria, additional qualification opportunities will be provided through rankings.
West Indies face Olympic qualification issue
The West Indies will not receive direct qualification because they represent multiple Caribbean nations and are not recognised as a single Olympic National Olympic Committee.
However, if they rank among the top eight non-qualified teams, a Caribbean qualifier event could decide which nation represents the region.
LA28 Olympic cricket format
The qualified teams will select squads of 15 players. Teams will be divided into groups of three and will play a combination of group-stage and crossover matches.
The top two teams will compete for the gold and silver medals, while the next two teams will fight for the bronze medal.
A total of 28 matches across the men’s and women’s competitions will be played at the purpose-built cricket venue in Pomona.
Jay Shah welcomes cricket’s Olympic return
ICC chairman Jay Shah described cricket’s inclusion at the Los Angeles Olympics as a landmark moment that will help expand the sport globally.
The qualification pathway now gives teams around the world a clear route to compete on cricket’s biggest multi-sport stage.
