Islam Makhachev Names Carlos Prates as Most Deserving UFC Challenger

Islam Makhachev already had his next title challenger in mind moments after successfully defending his UFC welterweight championship at UFC 330. Following his hard-fought victory over Ian Machado Garry, the Russian champion named Carlos Prates as the fighter he believes deserves the next opportunity.

Makhachev was asked about his potential next opponent during a post-fight segment with Paramount+. Rather than avoiding the question, the champion mentioned several contenders before making his preference clear.

When asked who should challenge him next, Makhachev considered the current status of several leading welterweights. He first mentioned Shavkat Rakhmonov but pointed out that the undefeated contender is currently inactive.

“Honestly, if you ask me today, Shavkat is not fighting. Prates is still fighting, still active, and maybe Prates,” Makhachev said.

The champion also acknowledged Michael Morales as another dangerous contender in the division. However, Makhachev questioned whether Morales’ recent activity was enough to warrant an immediate title opportunity.

“Morales is also good, but Morales fight I don’t last time, I don’t remember when he fight,” Makhachev added.

Ultimately, the two-division UFC champion returned to the name of Prates when asked who was the most deserving challenger.

“If you ask like who is most deserving guy, I think Carlos Prates,” Makhachev concluded.
