England fast bowler Jofra Archer has revealed that KL Rahul, not Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma, has been the toughest Indian batter he has bowled to during his career. The revelation comes ahead of the highly anticipated ODI series between India and England, which begins on July 14.
Archer, known for his pace and accuracy across formats, admitted that Rahul consistently troubled him during their early encounters in the Indian Premier League (IPL), describing the stylish batter as someone capable of hitting any delivery to any part of the ground.
Archer recalls difficult battles against KL Rahul
Speaking on the YouTube show “The Super Over”, Archer reflected on his toughest bowling challenges and highlighted Rahul’s dominance during their IPL meetings.
“In the first few years of IPL, I found KL Rahul really hard to bowl at. I reckon he was in his prime then and I just felt like he could hit any ball anywhere. And he actually did.”
The numbers support Archer’s assessment. Rahul has enjoyed considerable success against the England pacer in the IPL, scoring runs at an average of 54 and a strike rate close to 148 while being dismissed only twice in 73 deliveries.
Head-to-head record between Archer and Rahul
The two players have also faced each other in international cricket. In Test matches, Rahul has remained unbeaten against Archer, scoring 50 runs from 136 deliveries without losing his wicket.
However, Archer has held the upper hand in T20 internationals, conceding only six runs in 10 deliveries to Rahul while dismissing him once.
With Rahul expected to feature in India’s ODI squad, another intriguing battle between the two could unfold during the upcoming England series.
Archer’s surprising Test cricket choice
When asked about the toughest batter he has encountered in Test cricket, Archer opted for an unconventional answer by naming former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter BJ Watling.
Archer recalled how difficult it was to dismiss Watling during England’s tour of New Zealand in 2019. The gritty middle-order batter frustrated England’s bowlers with his patience and resilience.
In their Test encounters, Watling scored 49 runs from 132 deliveries against Archer while being dismissed only once, showcasing the determination that made him one of New Zealand’s most dependable red-ball cricketers.
England star preparing for another India challenge
Archer remains one of England’s most important pace-bowling weapons, having claimed 187 wickets across international formats. As England prepare for another high-profile series against India, his expected duel with Rahul could once again become one of the key contests of the tour.
With both players carrying significant experience and proven records, fans can look forward to another fascinating chapter in their ongoing rivalry when the ODI series gets underway next month.
