Former Team India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has lauded Axar Patel for producing a stunning comeback after struggling throughout the recently concluded T20I series against England. The all-rounder played a pivotal role in India’s six-wicket victory in the first ODI at Edgbaston, delivering match-winning contributions with both bat and ball.
Axar endured a difficult T20I series, managing very few runs and averaging below four across five innings as India suffered a heavy 0-4 series defeat. However, the experienced left-hander responded emphatically in the 50-over format, showcasing his value as one of India’s most reliable all-rounders.
Axar Patel Shines With Bat and Ball
Chasing 259 for victory, India found themselves under pressure at 160/4 when Axar Patel walked to the crease. The left-hander displayed composure and aggression in equal measure, remaining unbeaten on 57 off just 52 deliveries.
His innings ensured India never lost control of the chase, as he expertly rotated strike while capitalizing on scoring opportunities against England’s bowling attack. India eventually reached the target in 45.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Earlier in the match, Axar had already made a significant impact with the ball, claiming four wickets to help dismiss England for 258 in 47.5 overs. His outstanding all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Abhishek Nayar Praises Axar’s Batting Approach
Speaking after the match, Abhishek Nayar highlighted the noticeable difference in Axar’s batting compared to the T20I series.
“It was heartening to see the way Axar Patel batted. It felt like a very different batter from the T20Is. He was in control yet played his shots. It never felt like he curbed his instincts.”
Nayar pointed out that Axar appeared far more confident and decisive in his shot selection, allowing him to play with freedom and authority during the run chase.
Crucial Partnership With Washington Sundar
One of the defining moments of India’s victory was the unbeaten 102-run partnership between Axar Patel and Washington Sundar for the fifth wicket. The duo rescued India from a potentially tricky situation and guided the team safely across the finish line.
Both players registered important half-centuries, frustrating England’s bowlers and ensuring there were no further setbacks during the chase.
Nayar Highlights Impact of Senior Players
Nayar also credited the presence of senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for creating an environment that allowed younger and supporting players to perform without excessive pressure.
“It also showed what senior players do to an environment. Sometimes when the focus is not on you and is on someone else, it can relieve the pressure of these younger players.”
According to Nayar, experienced players often absorb much of the public and media attention, enabling teammates like Axar Patel and Washington Sundar to play with greater freedom and confidence.
India Take Early Advantage in ODI Series
India’s victory at Edgbaston gave them a valuable 1-0 lead in the ODI series against England. While several players contributed to the win, Axar Patel’s all-round brilliance proved decisive.
After a difficult T20I campaign, the 32-year-old delivered the perfect response, reaffirming his importance to India’s white-ball setup. With both bat and ball, Axar demonstrated why he remains one of the most dependable all-rounders in international cricket.
As the series moves to Cardiff for the second ODI, India will hope Axar can maintain this form and continue to play a key role in their quest for another series victory on English soil.
