Lionel Messi to Start on Bench Against Jordan as Argentina Prioritise FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage

Argentina have already secured qualification for the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, allowing head coach Lionel Scaloni to manage the workload of his star players. As a result, captain Lionel Messi will start the final Group-stage fixture against Jordan on the bench.

Scaloni confirmed that the decision is purely tactical and not related to any injury concerns. With the knockout rounds approaching, Argentina are focused on keeping their veteran captain fresh for the business end of the tournament.

Scaloni Explains Messi’s Absence from Starting XI

Speaking before the match, Scaloni dismissed speculation over Messi’s fitness and clarified that the decision had been planned in advance.

“Leo is going to start on the bench. It’s not because of any injury. It’s simply a decision we’ve made as part of our rotation plans. He’ll come into the match later,” Scaloni said.

The Argentina coach also hinted that several regular starters could be rested, giving other squad members an opportunity after their efforts in training throughout the tournament.

Despite being rested, Messi remains the tournament’s leading scorer with five goals from Argentina’s opening two matches.
