Mamadou Sangaré: Brentford’s £39m Midfield Sensation

Mamadou Sangaré has made an impressive impression since joining Brentford in a club-record £39m transfer from Lens. The 24-year-old Mali midfielder has quickly demonstrated his technical ability, work rate and composure in the Premier League, earning praise from former coaches, teammates and scouts who have followed his development.

His rise has been the result of years of dedication, discipline and a determination to succeed. From playing football every day as a six-year-old in Bamako to becoming an important part of Brentford’s midfield, Sangaré has consistently stood out for his attitude and quality on the pitch.

A scout’s first impression: ‘Who on earth is this player?’

Youness Bengelloun, a former Manchester City scout and agent, still remembers his first meeting with Sangaré at Rapid Vienna’s training ground in July 2025. During a visit to the Austrian club, Bengelloun came across a player whose ability immediately caught his attention.

“When I first saw him, I thought to myself: ‘Who on earth is this player?’” Bengelloun recalled.

He described Sangaré as a “footballing alien”, highlighting the midfielder’s unusual combination of technical quality and relentless work rate. At the time, the transfer window was in full swing, and Sangaré was preparing for the next stage of his career.

A few weeks after that encounter, the midfielder joined Lens for approximately €5m. His performances in France helped establish his reputation, eventually attracting Brentford, who signed him for a club-record £39m at the beginning of August.

Bengelloun identified two qualities that stood out immediately: Sangaré’s technique and his willingness to work hard. Those characteristics have continued to define his performances at every club he has represented.

Brentford move brings immediate Premier League impact

Sangaré made an encouraging start to life in English football. He impressed during his Premier League debut against Tottenham, dominating the central areas of the pitch and providing the assist for Keane Lewis-Potter’s opening goal.

The Mali international has also featured in every game for Brentford this season, demonstrating his importance to the team’s midfield. His ability to influence matches through his work rate, technical control and composure has made him one of the notable additions to the club’s squad.

Brentford’s upcoming fixture against Brighton will provide another opportunity for the midfielder to demonstrate his quality.

Tom Saintfiet, who managed Mali from 2024 to 2026, was among the first coaches to recognise Sangaré’s potential at international level. He handed the midfielder his debut against Mozambique in September 2024 and was immediately impressed by his contribution.

“I gave him his debut for Mali in September 2024, against Mozambique. He made an immediate impact,” Saintfiet said. “He’s every manager’s dream player.”

Sangaré’s football journey began at the age of six

Sangaré’s development started at Association Sportive Aboubacar Coulibaly (ASAC), a small football club in the Faladié neighbourhood of Bamako, Mali’s capital. He joined the club when he was just six years old and quickly made it an important part of his daily life.

Bakary Coulibaly, his coach at the time, remembers how regularly the young player visited the training ground. Living close to the ASAC pitch allowed Sangaré to spend much of his time playing football, and his talent became apparent from an early age.

“He lived not far from the ASAC pitch, so he’d come and play every day,” Coulibaly said. “Right from the start I could see that Mamadou had great potential. He played as a right midfielder and was already technically better than the others.”

However, it was not only his technical ability that impressed his coach. Sangaré’s competitive personality, leadership qualities and desire to win were also clear even as a young child.

“What surprised me most about Mamadou was that he always wanted to win. Even then he was very demanding of himself and his teammates and acted like a leader. When the team was struggling he was always looking for a solution to help us win.”

Those early qualities have remained central to his approach throughout his career. His determination to improve and willingness to take responsibility have helped him progress through different levels of football.

Discipline and confidence make him a manager’s dream

Saintfiet believes Sangaré’s professionalism away from the pitch is just as important as his performances during matches. According to the former Mali manager, the midfielder takes responsibility for managing his daily routine and maintaining the standards required to perform at the highest level.

“He manages everything in his professional life,” Saintfiet said. “He controls his time for eating, sleeping, training … some people go to nightclubs to clear their heads, but he lives like a professional 24 hours a day.”

Saintfiet also recalled a conversation between Sangaré and fellow Mali international Yves Bissouma, who asked the midfielder about his favourite position on the pitch. Sangaré’s response demonstrated the confidence he has in his own abilities.

“I remember one day, Yves Bissouma asked Mamadou what his favourite position on the pitch was. Mamadou answered that he wanted his own. I’ll never forget that moment because it shows he had enormous confidence in his own abilities. But he’s not arrogant; he’s very shy. Very laid-back.”

Despite that confidence, Saintfiet describes Sangaré as a calm and reserved personality. He believes the midfielder rarely allows pressure to affect his decisions, even when opponents surround him and attempt to restrict his movement.

“When I think of Mamadou, I think first and foremost of his personality. He’s never nervous, he always stays calm. He’s always in control of the situation. When he receives the ball surrounded by three players, he’ll keep his cool and he’ll manage to find the pass to get out of it.”

That composure has become one of Sangaré’s defining strengths. His ability to retain possession and find solutions under pressure gives his team an important option in central midfield.

From Mali to European football: Salzburg, Rapid Vienna and Lens

After developing at ASAC, Sangaré progressed to Yeelen Olympique, continuing his football education in Mali before moving to Europe in September 2020. His performances attracted the attention of RB Salzburg scouts, who identified his potential through video footage and brought him to Austria.

His early European career included several loan spells as he continued gaining experience and developing his game. In July 2024, he made a permanent move to Rapid Vienna, where his performances helped him attract further attention.

His time at Rapid Vienna was followed by a move to Lens in August 2025. Although he spent only one season at the French club, it proved to be an important period in his development.

Sangaré played a key role in Lens winning the Coupe de France and also received the Marc-Vivien Foé award, which recognises the best African player in Ligue 1. The achievement further strengthened his reputation and highlighted his growing influence in European football.

Impressive performances for Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations

Sangaré’s progress at club level has also been reflected in his international performances. Last season, he participated in his first Africa Cup of Nations, helping Mali reach the quarter-finals.

His performances attracted attention from teammates, including fellow Mali midfielder Lassana Coulibaly, who particularly remembered his display against Comoros during the group stage.

“The match during which he was the most impressive was against the Comoros [in the group stages],” Lassana Coulibaly said. “The first time we had seen him in training we all noticed he had that extra something. But in that match he was absolutely incredible.”

Saintfiet was also impressed by Sangaré’s contribution against tournament hosts Morocco. However, the former manager highlighted not just his performance but also his willingness to adapt to the team’s tactical requirements.

Saintfiet had asked Sangaré to play on the right flank to allow Mali to use a five-man midfield. Rather than questioning the decision or expressing discomfort about playing outside his preferred role, the midfielder accepted the responsibility immediately.

“I asked him to play on the right flank so we could field five midfielders. When you ask certain players to play in different positions, they often tell you it’s not their natural role and that they don’t feel comfortable. But when I spoke to Mamadou about it he immediately said: ‘OK coach, I’ll play wherever you want for the good of the team. I’ll do my best.’ He is a loyal player who has always done everything he could to help me.”

His response reflected the team-first mentality that has been a consistent feature of his career. His versatility gives managers additional tactical options, while his willingness to follow instructions makes him a valuable member of the squad.

Brentford may not be the highest level of Sangaré’s career

Brentford are the latest club to benefit from Sangaré’s technical ability, discipline and commitment. His strong start in the Premier League suggests that the midfielder has adapted quickly to the demands of English football.

However, Saintfiet believes there could be even greater opportunities ahead for the 24-year-old. Having watched his development at international level, the former Mali manager is convinced that Sangaré has the ability to compete at a higher level in the future.

“I reckon he can play at an even higher level,” Saintfiet said. “He won’t stop at Brentford.”

From his early days at a local club in Bamako to winning silverware in France and establishing himself in the Premier League, Sangaré’s journey reflects years of hard work and determination. His technical quality, competitive mentality and professional approach have earned recognition from people who have worked closely with him.

At Brentford, he now has another opportunity to develop his game and demonstrate his abilities on one of football’s biggest stages. If his early performances are an indication of what is to come, the midfielder’s rise may still have several important chapters ahead.
