Northamptonshire vs Gloucestershire produced a thrilling finish in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup as Gloucestershire chased down 309 with just four deliveries remaining at Cheltenham.

Northamptonshire posted 308 after impressive contributions from Nathan McSweeney and George Bartlett, who scored 79 and 75 respectively. Despite reaching a competitive total, the Steelbacks could not contain Gloucestershire’s chase.

Joseph Eckland was the decisive figure for Gloucestershire, remaining unbeaten on 68 as he guided his side through a tense final phase. Cameron Bancroft and James Bracey had earlier provided the foundation with half-centuries.

McSweeney and Bartlett Power Northamptonshire to 308

Northamptonshire made a strong start after being asked to bat, with Nathan McSweeney continuing his excellent One-Day Cup form. The Australian reached his half-century from 43 balls and struck nine fours during his innings.

McSweeney combined with Miller for a 73-run partnership before building another important stand with George Bartlett. The pair added valuable runs and both completed their sixth half-centuries of the competition.

McSweeney was eventually dismissed by Daz Ahmed, who removed the batter’s leg stump as he attempted an aggressive stroke. Bartlett responded by accelerating and reached his fifty from only 39 balls.

Bartlett finished with 75, including 12 fours and two sixes, before falling to Price while attempting a slog-sweep. Northamptonshire were 238 for 6 at that stage and needed their lower order to push the total beyond 300.

Dom Leech and Liam Guthrie supplied important late runs as Northamptonshire reached 308 in 46.3 overs. Ahmed was the standout bowler for Gloucestershire, recording career-best List A figures of 4 for 56.

Bracey and Bancroft Give Gloucestershire a Fast Start

Gloucestershire began their chase positively, with James Bracey and Cameron Bancroft combining for a 99-run opening partnership from 14 overs.

The pair found the boundary regularly, collecting 17 fours between them. Bracey was particularly aggressive and raced to his fifty from 37 balls before falling for 56.

Bancroft continued to anchor the innings and reached his half-century from 58 deliveries. His partnership with Price added another 43 runs and kept Gloucestershire ahead of the required rate.

Northamptonshire Fight Back in the Middle Overs

Northamptonshire fought their way back into the contest through Procter, who claimed two important wickets. Price was caught behind before Bancroft was dismissed after driving to mid-off.

Joe Phillips was then run out by McSweeney with Gloucestershire on 180 for 4 in the 31st over. The sudden cluster of wickets gave Northamptonshire genuine hopes of defending their total.

Joseph Eckland Holds His Nerve Under Pressure

With the match delicately poised, Joseph Eckland produced the innings Gloucestershire needed. He formed a crucial sixth-wicket partnership of 70 with Daz Ahmed.

Ahmed scored 48 and struck five fours and two sixes before being caught at deep backward square off Dom Leech. Leech then dismissed Middleton lbw, leaving Gloucestershire under renewed pressure.

Eckland, however, remained composed. He reached his half-century from 66 balls and continued to manage the chase alongside Aman Rao.

The pair held their nerve during a dramatic finish, with Eckland completing his unbeaten 68 as Gloucestershire reached 309 for 7 in 49.2 overs.

Gloucestershire Win by Three Wickets

Gloucestershire completed a three-wicket victory with four balls remaining, turning a difficult chase into a memorable One-Day Cup win.

Eckland’s unbeaten 68 proved decisive, while Bancroft’s 68 and Bracey’s 56 provided the platform for the successful pursuit. For Northamptonshire, McSweeney and Bartlett’s fifties were not enough to secure victory despite their strong total.

The result also highlighted Gloucestershire’s ability to handle pressure in a close run chase, with Eckland’s calm finishing proving the difference between the two sides.
