Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue produced outstanding bowling performances as England took control of the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley on Wednesday. Both pacers claimed five-wicket hauls, helping England dismiss Pakistan for just 171.

Pakistan, who have lost 13 of their last 18 Tests, struggled in challenging batting conditions. Robinson finished with figures of 5-51, while Tongue returned 5-46, giving England a commanding start to the series.

Robinson strikes with the first ball

England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bowl, and Robinson immediately justified the decision. The right-arm pacer trapped Pakistan opener Azan Awais lbw with the very first delivery of the innings.

The dismissal created a piece of history, as it marked the first time a wicket had fallen from the opening delivery of a Test series played in England.

Robinson continued his impressive start by dismissing Shan Masood lbw in the fifth over. Pakistan were soon reduced to 6-2 as England’s seam attack made full use of the conditions.

Pakistan recover before England strike again

After the early setbacks, Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique steadied Pakistan’s innings. The pair built a partnership of 91 around a rain interruption and gave the visitors hope of recovering from their poor start.

However, Josh Tongue eventually removed Imam with a sharp low catch by Harry Brook at second slip. Imam was dismissed for 42, while Shafique later fell for 61 to Robinson.

England then regained complete control as Tongue dismissed Salman Ali Agha and Ali Usman in successive deliveries. Pakistan’s lower order collapsed rapidly, with the final five wickets falling for just 21 runs.

Robinson and Tongue share the five-wicket glory

The two England fast bowlers both completed five-wicket hauls in the same innings, creating an unusual problem over who would keep the match ball.

Robinson revealed that he and Tongue decided to split the match ball in half so that both could keep a piece as a souvenir of their memorable performances.

“We were walking off and I said to Tonguey: ‘We should split it’ and he said: ‘I actually think we should do that. I think it would be quite cool’,” Robinson said.

He added that having two bowlers take five wickets in the same innings is rare and that keeping half of the ball would give them something to remember the achievement.

England finish strongly with Joe Root unbeaten

England also made a strong start with the bat before the close of play. The hosts reached 112-2, putting themselves in a promising position after an excellent bowling display.

Ben Duckett was dismissed for 15 after being trapped lbw by Mohammad Abbas, while fellow opener Emilio Gay edged Mohammad Ali to Salman Ali Agha at slip for 33.

However, Joe Root and Jordan Cox steadied England with an unbeaten partnership of 64. Root remained unbeaten on 37 at stumps in his first Test as England’s captain since returning to the role following Ben Stokes’ international retirement.

Pakistan face a difficult second day

Pakistan will need an early breakthrough on the second morning if they are to prevent England from building a substantial first-innings lead. Root’s wicket, along with that of Harry Brook, is likely to be particularly important for the visitors.

Abdullah Shafique acknowledged that the conditions could remain difficult when play resumes and said Pakistan would look to bounce back after a challenging opening day.

With Robinson and Tongue already making a major impact, England are firmly in control of the Headingley Test and will aim to convert their strong start into a series-opening victory.
