Olympic medallists PV Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu were among 10 prominent Indian sportspersons elected unopposed to the Athletes’ Commission of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Tuesday. The election process was rendered unnecessary after two candidates withdrew their nominations, leaving exactly 10 contenders for the 10 available positions.

The newly elected commission includes athletes from badminton, weightlifting, hockey, shooting, fencing, athletics and swimming. The selection brings several established names from Indian sport into a body that represents athletes within the country’s Olympic administration.

Former track and field athlete Sudha Singh withdrew from the contest late Monday night, following the earlier withdrawal of badminton player Kidambi Srikanth. With the number of candidates reduced to match the number of seats, all remaining candidates were declared elected without a vote.

PV Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu Among 10 Unopposed Winners

PV Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu were among the 10 sportspersons declared elected unopposed to the IOA Athletes’ Commission. Returning Officer Sanjay K Srivastava announced the results on Tuesday, confirming that five male and five female candidates had secured positions on the commission.

The election was initially expected to determine who would occupy the 10 available seats. However, the withdrawal of two candidates changed the situation, leaving no competition for the remaining positions.

Sudha Singh pulled out of the race late on Monday night, while ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth had withdrawn his candidature earlier that day. Their decisions meant that the final list contained exactly 10 candidates for 10 positions.

As a result, the Returning Officer did not need to conduct a poll and formally declared all 10 remaining candidates elected unopposed.

Complete List of IOA Athletes’ Commission Members

The newly elected Athletes’ Commission brings together a group of Indian sportspersons with experience across several Olympic disciplines. The 10 members include five men and five women.

The complete list of elected members is as follows:

  • PV Sindhu
  • Mirabai Chanu
  • Harmanpreet Singh
  • Salima Tete
  • Swapnil Kusale
  • Bhavani Devi
  • Tajinderpal Singh Toor
  • Bombayla Devi
  • Sajan Prakash
  • Manjeet Singh

The inclusion of Olympic medallists Sindhu and Chanu adds significant international experience to the commission. Other members, including hockey players Harmanpreet Singh and Salima Tete, shooter Swapnil Kusale, fencer Bhavani Devi and swimmer Sajan Prakash, represent different areas of Indian sport.

The commission is intended to provide athletes with representation within the IOA structure. Its members will also have an important role in selecting representatives who will participate in the association’s wider decision-making process.

Two Athletes’ Commission Members Will Join the IOA General Body

The election of the 10 members is only the first stage of the process. According to the announced arrangements, two members of the Athletes’ Commission will be selected to join the IOA General Body with voting rights.

One male and one female member will be chosen for these positions. They will represent the Athletes’ Commission in the IOA General Body and participate in the association’s Executive Council elections scheduled for December 5.

Their voting rights will give the selected representatives a formal role in the IOA’s electoral process. This arrangement ensures that athletes have a voice in the decisions concerning the leadership and administration of the national Olympic body.

Chairperson and Vice Chairperson Elections to Be Held Later

The Athletes’ Commission will also elect its chairperson and vice chairperson in a separate process. One male and one female representative will be selected for these leadership positions, with the possibility of either gender occupying either role.

The chairperson and vice chairperson will become members of the IOA Executive Council. Their positions will provide the commission with direct representation in the association’s executive-level structure.

The elections for the chairperson and vice chairperson, along with the selection of the two representatives for the IOA General Body, will take place at a later date. Therefore, while all 10 commission members have now been confirmed, the leadership roles and additional representative positions are yet to be decided.

IOA Athletes’ Commission to Play a Role in Olympic Administration

The Athletes’ Commission forms an important part of the Indian Olympic Association’s structure by providing a platform for sportspersons to participate in discussions and decisions affecting athletes. Its members bring first-hand experience of competing at national and international levels.

The presence of athletes from different sporting disciplines also allows the commission to represent a wider range of experiences and concerns within Indian sport. Their involvement is particularly relevant when decisions involve competition arrangements, athlete welfare and the broader functioning of the Olympic movement in India.

The selection of the two General Body representatives and the commission’s leadership will be the next important steps. Those decisions will determine which members take on additional responsibilities within the IOA’s executive and electoral structures.

December 5 IOA Executive Council Elections Ahead

With the 10-member Athletes’ Commission now confirmed, attention will turn to the next stage of the IOA election process. Two commission members, one male and one female, will be selected to represent athletes in the General Body and take part in the Executive Council elections on December 5.

The commission will also choose its chairperson and vice chairperson, who will become members of the IOA Executive Council. These appointments will establish the commission’s leadership and formal representation within the association.

For now, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu and the eight other elected sportspersons have secured their places on the Athletes’ Commission without a contested vote. The remaining appointments will determine how the newly formed body participates in the IOA’s upcoming administrative and electoral decisions.
