Indian Athletics stars Rohit Yadav and Murali Sreeshankar delivered standout performances on the final day of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, securing gold medals and strengthening their Asian Games qualification claims.
Rohit Yadav breaks season best with stunning javelin throw
Rohit Yadav produced a spectacular final attempt of 87.05m to win the men’s javelin title. His throw became the best effort by an Indian athlete this season, surpassing Neeraj Chopra’s 85.69m mark achieved at the Doha Diamond League earlier this month.
The winning throw came in Rohit’s final attempt after he had already achieved the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) qualification standard for the Asian Games.
Yashvir Singh finished second with an 83.72m throw, while Sachin Yadav completed the podium with 82.32m. Former Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena missed qualification after managing a best throw of 77.21m.
Murali Sreeshankar continues long jump dominance
In the men’s long jump event, Murali Sreeshankar once again showed his consistency with a winning leap of 8.38m.
Sreeshankar produced an impressive series of jumps, recording distances of 8.06m, 8.00m, 8.21m, 8.38m, 8.26m and one foul attempt.
Uttar Pradesh teenager Shahnavaz Khan pushed the experienced jumper with an 8.30m effort, while P David finished third with 8.06m. All three athletes achieved the AFI Asian Games qualification mark.
Pooja Singh, Vishal TK also secure victories
Haryana’s Pooja Singh won the women’s high jump gold after clearing 1.83m, meeting the AFI qualification standard for the Asian Games.
Karnataka’s Supriya B and Uttar Pradesh’s Khyati Mathur finished second and third after both clearing 1.80m.
Meanwhile, national record holder Vishal TK won the men’s 400m race with a time of 45.43 seconds, continuing his strong season after his Federation Cup success.
Manu TS, Jay Kumar, Dharmveer Choudhary and Rajesh Ramesh also crossed the AFI entry standard, making the event a successful outing for India’s athletics contingent ahead of major international competitions.
