Sarfaraz Khan vs Dhruv Jurel: Murali Kartik Backs Jurel for Galle Test

Sarfaraz Khan has made his return to the Indian Test squad after being recalled as a replacement for injured Sai Sudharsan ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. However, former India spinner Murali Kartik believes the Mumbai batter should wait for his opportunity rather than immediately replace Dhruv Jurel in the playing XI.

Sarfaraz’s return has created an interesting selection debate ahead of the first Test in Galle on August 15. The right-hander has an impressive domestic record and has already shown his ability to score heavily in Test Cricket, while Jurel has been part of India’s recent plans and offers wicketkeeping cover in addition to his batting.

Murali Kartik backs Dhruv Jurel for Galle Test

Jurel’s position came under scrutiny after he scored 1 and 17 in India’s recent warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. His performances immediately led to calls for Sarfaraz to be included in the XI, particularly because of the Mumbai batter’s reputation against spin.

However, Kartik believes the team should maintain consistency and reward Jurel for the work he has done within the setup.

“Dhruv Jurel is a very handy Test batter. He has done exactly what the team has asked him to do. So, I would want him to start in the playing XI. Sarfaraz has done nothing wrong. But he is coming in as a replacement,” Kartik said during a media interaction with Hindustan Times Digital.

The former spinner also highlighted the importance of ensuring players feel secure about their positions within the team, particularly during a new Test cycle.

“It’s very important that the players feel very secure about their places in this playing XI,” Kartik added.

Sarfaraz’s recall came because of an injury

Sarfaraz was not originally part of India’s squad for the Sri Lanka Tests. His return became necessary after Sai Sudharsan suffered a toe injury that ruled him out of the series.

That distinction is important from a selection perspective. Sarfaraz has earned his place back in the squad, but his inclusion does not necessarily mean he has moved ahead of Jurel in India’s original plans for the series.

The Mumbai batter last featured in India’s Test squad during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Despite producing significant domestic numbers after that tour, he remained outside the Test setup until Sudharsan’s injury created an opening.

Sarfaraz has already proved his Test credentials

There is a strong case for Sarfaraz if India decide they need a specialist batter against spin. He made an impressive start to his Test career and scored 150 against New Zealand in 2024.

His ability to play spin, use sweeps and attack from the middle order makes him an attractive option for conditions in Sri Lanka. However, Kartik’s argument is that those qualities should not automatically override the team’s existing selection plans.

Sarfaraz’s opportunity could still arrive during the series. If Jurel struggles in the opening Test or India decide they need an additional specialist batter, the Mumbai player would be one of the obvious candidates to come into the XI.

Kartik says India need to trust their specialist batters

The selection debate also comes amid a broader discussion about India’s Test combination. Under head coach Gautam Gambhir, India have often looked for players who can contribute in more than one discipline.

Kartik believes India should avoid overloading the batting lineup at the expense of the bowling attack. According to him, the priority in Test cricket should remain having enough specialist bowlers to take 20 wickets.

“You want to make sure that you are not compromising on either at the cost of the other. So, you don’t want to load your batting just to protect your batting and in the process weaken the bowling,” Kartik explained.

India need enough bowling options to take 20 wickets

India’s bowling resources have already faced significant challenges during the current Test cycle. Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable for the Sri Lanka series, while the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin has also changed the balance of the team.

Kartik believes India should therefore focus on selecting a combination capable of bowling Sri Lanka out twice rather than simply adding another batting option.

He pointed to players such as Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar as bowlers who can also contribute with the bat if selected, potentially allowing India to maintain both batting depth and bowling strength.

Why Dhruv Jurel could still be important

Jurel’s value extends beyond his batting. He is also a wicketkeeper, giving India additional flexibility if Rishabh Pant is unavailable or requires a break during the series.

More importantly, Jurel has already been trusted by the current team management. Dropping him immediately after one disappointing warm-up game could send a mixed message to a player who is still establishing himself in Test cricket.

For India, the decision at No. 6 is therefore not simply Sarfaraz Khan versus Dhruv Jurel. It is a question of whether the team prioritises continuity or chooses a specialist batter based on the expected conditions in Galle.

India’s likely selection dilemma for Galle

With the first Test scheduled to begin on August 15, India have several decisions to make. The absence of Bumrah and Sudharsan has already altered the balance of the squad, while Washington Sundar is also unavailable for the opening Test.

Jurel’s recent warm-up scores have given Sarfaraz an opportunity to push his case, but Kartik’s view is that the Mumbai batter should wait for his chance rather than being rushed into the XI.

The final decision will depend on India’s assessment of the Galle surface, their bowling combination and how they want to balance their middle order. If the team opts for consistency, Jurel could retain the No. 6 position, with Sarfaraz waiting on the bench.
