England have announced a 17-member squad for next month’s T20I series against India, with uncapped all-rounder James Coles receiving his maiden international call-up.

The five-match series begins on July 1 in Durham and marks England’s first T20 assignment since their semifinal exit at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

At just 22 years old, Coles has emerged as one of England’s brightest young talents. The Sussex star has impressed as a top-order batter while also contributing with his left-arm spin bowling.

James Coles rewarded for outstanding rise

Coles recently featured for the England Lions against South Africa and has enjoyed a remarkable rise in domestic cricket. Earlier this year, he became the most expensive player at The Hundred’s inaugural player auction after London Spirit secured his services for £390,000.

England national selector Marcus North praised the youngster’s development and explained the decision behind his selection.

“James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place following his performances with the England Lions and in T20 competitions here and abroad during the past 12 months,” North said.

England recall Cox, Baker and Mahmood

England have also recalled several players for the upcoming series. Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker return after making their Test debuts during the recent series against New Zealand.

Fast bowler Saqib Mahmood has also earned a comeback after being out of the T20I setup since January.

Meanwhile, England have suffered injury setbacks with all-rounders Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton ruled out of the series.

Why England selected a larger squad

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) opted for a larger squad due to scheduling challenges. The T20I series begins just two days after the scheduled conclusion of England’s third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

North explained that the expanded group will provide flexibility as players transition between formats.

“We have selected a larger squad to accommodate for the fact that this series will begin shortly after the Test series against New Zealand is due to conclude, which allows us to be flexible,” North added.
