Jio Platforms is preparing for the next generation of Telecommunications technology, with commercial 6G services expected to begin rolling out in the early 2030s. The company also plans to expand its international presence by partnering with local telecom operators and businesses rather than entering overseas markets independently.
Akash Ambani, managing director of Jio Platforms Ltd, outlined the strategy at the Jio IPO Media Meet, highlighting the company’s contribution to 6G development and its ambition to turn its technology capabilities into opportunities in India and international markets.
Jio Expects Commercial 6G Rollout in Early 2030s
Ambani said 6G technology remains in the pre-standardisation phase, with formal standards expected to be established around 2029. Commercial deployments are anticipated to begin in the early 2030s.
Jio plans to continue investing in its end-to-end technology platform as the telecommunications industry moves towards the next generation of mobile connectivity. Ambani described 6G as a software-focused upgrade, highlighting the importance of the company’s underlying technology capabilities.
“For us, 6G is going to be a software upgrade. What we’ll continue to invest in is our deep end-to-end technology stack,” Ambani said.
The approach reflects Jio’s emphasis on developing and controlling the technology that supports its network, rather than relying exclusively on individual hardware products or software licences.
Ambani also reiterated the company’s broader mission of using technology to improve people’s lives and making digital services accessible to people across India.
Jio Plans International Expansion Through Local Partnerships
Alongside its preparations for 6G, Jio Platforms is exploring opportunities to take its telecommunications technology stack into international markets through partnerships with local players.
Rather than establishing operations independently in every new country, the company intends to work with existing businesses that can deploy its technology in their respective markets.
Ambani said Jio’s platform and business model differ from simply selling hardware or granting software licences. Instead, the company aims to act as a managed services partner, providing technology capabilities that local operators can use to develop their own offerings.
“We don’t believe that we need to go and enter new markets. We believe that the technology and the end-to-end stack itself enables new market opportunity for those partners,” he said.
Jio already operates its end-to-end technology stack on its own network. The company now wants to identify suitable international partners that can use this platform to expand their services and strengthen their telecommunications capabilities.
This partnership-led strategy could allow Jio to pursue overseas opportunities without having to build a complete operating presence in every market. Its success will depend on finding partners whose requirements align with Jio’s technology and business model.
Four Key Growth Areas for Jio Platforms
Ambani identified four major areas of opportunity for Jio Platforms as it looks to expand beyond its existing telecommunications business.
- Mobile services: Mobile connectivity remains a core part of Jio’s business, with the company continuing to develop its network and prepare for future generations of wireless technology.
- Home connectivity: Residential broadband and other home connectivity services offer opportunities to extend digital access and support growing demand for connected services.
- Enterprise solutions: Jio sees opportunities to provide technology and connectivity services to businesses, including through partnerships with local operators in overseas markets.
- Technology monetisation: The company aims to generate additional value from its underlying technology stack by making its capabilities available to partners and customers beyond its own network.
According to Ambani, Jio’s end-to-end technology capabilities allow it to participate across multiple parts of the technology value chain. This creates potential growth opportunities beyond its established mobile connectivity business.
Jio Sees Opportunity for India to Export Technology
Ambani also highlighted the potential for India to become a technology exporter rather than relying heavily on imported technology. Jio’s investment in its own telecommunications platform is part of a broader effort to develop capabilities that can serve domestic users and support international expansion.
By offering its technology stack through partnerships, Jio hopes to demonstrate that Indian-developed telecommunications solutions can be deployed in other markets. The approach could create opportunities to monetise its technology investments while helping overseas partners build and operate digital networks.
The company’s strategy combines long-term investment in next-generation connectivity with a business model focused on managed services and international partnerships. However, the anticipated 6G rollout remains dependent on the development of industry standards and the subsequent deployment of commercial networks.
What Jio’s 6G Strategy Means for Its Future
Jio Platforms’ plans point to two major priorities: preparing for the transition to 6G and expanding the commercial reach of its existing technology capabilities.
With standards expected around 2029 and commercial deployments projected for the early 2030s, the company has several years to continue developing its platform and evaluating future network requirements. Its partnership-led international strategy could provide another avenue for growth while allowing local businesses to use Jio’s technology in their own markets.
The combination of mobile services, home connectivity, enterprise solutions and technology monetisation will be central to Jio’s ambitions. Whether these plans translate into significant international growth will depend on technology development, partner adoption and the company’s ability to turn its telecommunications expertise into commercially sustainable services.
