Aakash Chopra Questions Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Omission from India’s ODI Squad for England Series Despite Strong Form

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed disappointment over Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s exclusion from India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against England. Chopra pointed out that the left-handed opener continues to score runs whenever given an opportunity, yet remains outside the selectors’ preferred plans.

India are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against England beginning on July 14 in Birmingham. While experienced stars such as Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli have been included, Jaiswal failed to find a place in the 15-member squad despite his recent success.

Aakash Chopra sympathizes with Yashasvi Jaiswal

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra stated that Jaiswal has every reason to feel frustrated after repeatedly delivering strong performances without receiving consistent opportunities.

According to Chopra, the youngster has already scored multiple centuries in his brief ODI career and may be wondering what more he needs to do to cement his place in the team.

“You’ve got to feel for Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has played very few matches and has scored two centuries. He scored a century in the last match against South Africa and was dropped for the next series. He scored a century in the last match against Afghanistan now and has been dropped for the next series.”

Chopra suggested that team balance may have worked against Jaiswal, with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan offering greater flexibility as an opener, middle-order batter and backup wicketkeeper.

“What more can I do? He will ask that question of himself for sure. Shubman Gill is there with Rohit Sharma. Ishan Kishan provides multiple options. He is a keeper, backup middle-order batter and backup opener as well. However, you have got to feel for Yashasvi. He is scoring runs, but his name is still not coming.”

Jaiswal impressed against Afghanistan

Jaiswal made a strong statement during the recently concluded ODI series against Afghanistan. The left-hander smashed an unbeaten 110 off 86 balls in Chennai, helping India chase down the target comfortably and complete a 3-0 series sweep.

Across six ODI appearances, Jaiswal has accumulated 285 runs at an impressive average of 71.25, strengthening his case for a permanent place in India’s 50-over setup.

Virat Kohli’s fitness could still open the door

Chopra also highlighted that Jaiswal could receive another opportunity if Virat Kohli fails to clear his scheduled fitness assessment before the England tour.

“Virat Kohli is subject to fitness. If he clears his fitness test, he will play. Otherwise, you might once again see Yashasvi Jaiswal’s name being added to this team.”

Kohli was unavailable for the Afghanistan ODI series due to a hamstring injury suffered during IPL 2026, which allowed Jaiswal to enter the squad and make an immediate impact.

India’s selection dilemma continues

While India’s selectors appear focused on building a squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Jaiswal’s continued omission has become a talking point among fans and experts. With consistent performances whenever called upon, the young opener remains one of the strongest contenders waiting for a regular opportunity in India’s ODI setup.
