Abhishek Nayar Makes Huge Statement on Shubman Gill After ‘Elite’ Match-Winning Knock in 1st ODI vs England

India captain Shubman Gill continues to strengthen his reputation as one of the world’s premier ODI batters, and his latest performance against England has drawn glowing praise from former Team India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.

Gill played a crucial role in India’s six-wicket victory over England in the opening ODI at Edgbaston on July 14. Chasing a target of 259 on a challenging surface, the Indian skipper produced a classy innings of 80 runs from 75 deliveries before retiring hurt, setting the platform for India’s successful chase.

His knock once again highlighted the remarkable consistency he has shown in the 50-over format, where he has been among the standout performers in international cricket throughout 2026.

Abhishek Nayar Sees a More Confident Shubman Gill

Speaking on Star Sports after the match, Nayar said Gill appears to have evolved both as a player and a leader, with the uncertainties that once surrounded his game now completely gone.

“It was absolutely elite batting and a class apart. He was always a terrific player but there has been a change to him recently. Even watching his press conferences, watching him at toss or speak about the game, it feels like he has reached a certain place of security and a place where he knows he belongs.”

Nayar went a step further by suggesting that Gill is no longer trying to prove himself to critics or selectors.

“The question marks in his mind have left the building. He is not looking to prove anything to anyone anymore.”

Captaincy Has Elevated Gill’s Game

According to Nayar, leadership responsibilities have played a major role in Gill’s transformation. Since taking over India’s ODI and Test captaincy, the 26-year-old has displayed greater confidence both on and off the field.

Nayar believes Gill’s successful leadership stint in the Indian Premier League also contributed significantly to his development as a cricketer.

“Captaincy has given him a lot of confidence and also him leading successfully in the IPL has added more belief in his system.”

The former coach also noted that Gill’s technique leaves very few opportunities for bowlers to exploit weaknesses.

“It felt like he had no loopholes where a bowler could target him. He has got runs everywhere.”

Outstanding ODI Numbers Continue to Grow

Gill’s consistency in the ODI format has been nothing short of exceptional. Following his latest innings, he boasts an average of 60.57 in 60 ODI matches while maintaining a strike rate above 101.

In 2026 alone, the Indian captain has averaged more than 113 while scoring at a strike rate exceeding 115, underlining his dominance in the format.

His ability to combine traditional stroke play with modern-day aggression has made him one of the most complete batters in world cricket.

Parthiv Patel Highlights Gill’s Newfound Assertiveness

Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, who has worked closely with Gill at Gujarat Titans, echoed Nayar’s views and praised the batter’s growth as a leader.

“He has reached a stage where he has nothing to prove to anyone. His messaging and the way he talks in the dressing room, there is a sense of assertiveness in him now.”

Patel revealed that discussions around Gill’s confidence began before the IPL season, particularly after he lost his place in India’s T20I setup. Instead of allowing that setback to affect him, Gill used it as motivation to improve further.

Work Ethic Compared to Virat Kohli

One of the most striking observations from Patel was his comparison between Gill’s dedication and that of Virat Kohli, widely regarded as one of the hardest-working cricketers of his generation.

“We always talk about Virat Kohli’s work ethic and how he works really hard on his game. Having seen Gill very closely, he is also right up there with Kohli in work ethics.”

Such praise highlights the commitment Gill has shown behind the scenes, a factor many believe has been instrumental in his rapid rise as both a batter and captain.

India’s Future Looks Secure Under Gill

Since succeeding Rohit Sharma as India’s Test and ODI captain last year, Gill has embraced the responsibility with remarkable maturity. His performances with the bat have improved, while his leadership has helped establish him as a central figure in India’s long-term plans.

With India already leading the ODI series against England 1-0, Gill’s form provides another major boost for the visitors. If his current trajectory continues, the young captain could soon establish himself among the most influential leaders and batters in modern cricket.
