Abishek Porel case proceedings have been deferred by the Calcutta High Court until September 14 after the West Bengal government requested additional time to continue its investigation following the Bengal cricketer’s arrest.
Porel, who has represented Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was arrested on Monday night in connection with a complaint filed by a medical student. The allegations against the cricketer are serious, and the matter remains under investigation.
Calcutta High Court defers hearing
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday considered a petition filed by a woman who has accused Porel of having sexual relations with her on the alleged promise of marriage.
A report was placed before a bench headed by Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya. The West Bengal government subsequently sought more time so that police could continue their investigation following Porel’s arrest.
The court accepted the request and directed that the matter be listed again on September 14.
Another accused yet to be arrested
According to the information reported by PTI, another person named as an accused in the case, reportedly a friend of Porel, has not yet been arrested.
Police are continuing efforts to trace the individual as the investigation proceeds. The development was among the factors cited in the ongoing proceedings surrounding the case.
Why was Abishek Porel arrested?
Porel was arrested by Mogra police following an earlier Calcutta High Court order dated July 14. The court had directed the police to arrest him and seize his electronic devices as part of the investigation.
A district court in Chinsurah subsequently rejected his bail plea and remanded him to three days of police custody.
The complaint was originally filed on June 30 and was registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act.
What are the allegations against Porel?
According to the complaint, the woman, a third-year medical student from Karnataka, alleged that Porel sexually assaulted and abused her after allegedly promising to marry her.
She reportedly told police that she first met Porel in 2023 and that they subsequently remained in a relationship for approximately three years.
The woman also alleged in her petition before the High Court that Porel threatened to make photographs of their intimate moments public.
These are allegations contained in the complaint and petition, and they have not been established as facts by a court. The investigation and judicial proceedings are ongoing.
Relationship reportedly continued for several years
The complaint reportedly states that the woman and Porel had discussed marriage and had travelled abroad together during their relationship.
According to the allegations, differences developed between the two approximately one-and-a-half years ago. The matter had reportedly reached a police station at that time, although no formal complaint was filed then.
Porel’s cricket career
Abishek Porel has been part of Delhi Capitals’ IPL setup and has featured for the franchise in the Indian Premier League.
He did not play competitive cricket after the conclusion of IPL 2026. During the 2026 season, Porel featured in four matches for Delhi Capitals.
His cricket career is now overshadowed by the ongoing legal proceedings, with the next significant development in the case expected when the matter returns before the Calcutta High Court on September 14.
What happens next in the Abishek Porel case?
The police are expected to continue their investigation while efforts remain underway to locate the other accused person mentioned in the case.
The September 14 hearing will provide the next opportunity for the Calcutta High Court to review the progress of the investigation and consider the matter further.
Until then, the allegations against Porel remain subject to the ongoing investigation and judicial process.
