Ajinkya Rahane’s Advice to India Batters Ahead of Sri Lanka Tests

Former India captain Ajinkya Rahane has shared a crucial piece of advice for India’s batting lineup ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. With the series set to begin in Galle on August 15, Rahane believes the Indian batters must adopt an aggressive and proactive approach against the hosts’ spin-heavy bowling attack.

Rahane’s advice comes from his own experience of playing in Sri Lankan conditions. During India’s 3-0 Test series whitewash in Sri Lanka in 2017, the right-handed batter made a significant contribution, scoring more than 200 runs, including a century and a half-century.

Rahane warns India batters against being too defensive

According to Rahane, the wickets in Sri Lanka can offer excellent batting conditions early in a Test match. However, batters must make the most of those conditions before the surface starts assisting the spinners.

He believes India’s batters should look to put pressure back on the bowlers instead of allowing the opposition to dictate terms.

“I think in Sri Lanka, the first day wicket generally is very good. But being top of the bowler as a batsman is very important. That’s what I have learned in Sri Lanka. You cannot be too defensive,” Rahane told PTI.

Rahane’s message is particularly important because Sri Lanka are expected to rely heavily on their spin options on home pitches. Indian batters will therefore need a clear individual game plan while maintaining the right balance between attack and defence.

India prepares for Sri Lanka’s spin challenge

The Indian team management has also taken steps to prepare the batting group for spin-friendly conditions. A four-member net bowling unit featuring Harsh Dubey, Shivang Kumar, Tanush Kotian and Vipraj Nigam has been added to the squad’s preparation setup.

The group includes specialist spinners and spin-bowling all-rounders, giving India’s batters an opportunity to face different styles of spin during their training sessions.

With the first Test scheduled in Galle, the preparation could prove important as India look to adapt quickly to conditions that are expected to favour spin as the match progresses.

Rahane says T20 cricket has changed Test batting

Rahane also reflected on how the rise of T20 cricket has influenced modern Test match batting. According to the former India captain, players are now bringing a much wider range of attacking shots into red-ball cricket.

Shots such as aerial strokes, scoops and reverse sweeps are increasingly being used in Test cricket, showing how techniques developed in white-ball formats have influenced the longest format.

Rahane believes this evolution is positive for the game, but players must also be capable of adapting quickly between formats.

Adaptability remains crucial in modern Test cricket

International players are often required to switch between T20, ODI and Test cricket within short periods. Rahane believes this makes tactical adaptability one of the most important qualities for modern batters.

He also highlighted changes in fast bowling, with pacers increasingly using wobble-seam deliveries and attempting yorkers in Test cricket. Continuous improvement and the ability to adjust according to match situations, he suggested, are essential for succeeding at the highest level.
