Liverpool forward Bradley Barcola has insisted that he feels no pressure to replace Mohamed Salah following his high-profile move from Paris Saint-Germain. The France international believes he can make his own contribution at Anfield rather than trying to follow in the footsteps of a player widely regarded as a club legend.
Barcola joined Liverpool from PSG in August in a transfer deal that could reach £123 million ($165 million). Despite the significant fee and expectations surrounding his arrival, the 24-year-old says the transfer price is not something he allows to affect his performances.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the winger also explained why he decided to leave PSG after three seasons and described his move to the Premier League as an opportunity he had wanted since childhood.
Bradley Barcola Says He Does Not Feel Pressure to Replace Mohamed Salah
Barcola arrived at Liverpool following Salah’s departure for Trabzonspor, leaving the Frenchman with the challenge of establishing himself in an attack that had previously relied heavily on the Egyptian forward.
Salah enjoyed a remarkable spell at Anfield, becoming one of the club’s most important attacking players and earning legendary status among supporters. Barcola acknowledged the scale of his predecessor’s achievements but made it clear that he does not intend to measure his career against Salah’s record.
“Firstly, I wasn’t the one who decided the transfer fee. So that’s not been my problem.
“And regarding Mo Salah, he’s a legend here. A huge one. He’s done big things here and for that I have an enormous respect for him. But it’s not pressure for me at all.
“I’m not Mohamed Salah, so I’m going to try to contribute whatever I can to the club and make my own mark on its history. I don’t feel any pressure about that.”
The French winger’s comments underline his intention to build his own identity at Liverpool. Rather than attempting to replicate Salah’s playing style or achievements, Barcola wants to focus on what he can bring to the team and gradually establish his place in the club’s history.
Why Barcola Decided to Leave Paris Saint-Germain
Barcola spent three seasons at PSG after progressing through the youth ranks at Lyon. During his time in Paris, he experienced success and won several trophies, but he felt that the summer transfer window offered the right opportunity to take on a new challenge.
The winger revealed that playing in the Premier League had been a long-standing ambition. When Liverpool made their move, he did not hesitate to accept the opportunity.
“Ever since I was young, I’ve always had the ambition of playing in the Premier League. For me, it was the right time to leave PSG. I spent so many great years there and won an enormous amount of trophies but it was the right time.
“When a club like Liverpool comes calling, it’s a great thing and so I didn’t have any doubts. I just knew I had to come here. I’m happy.”
Although Barcola was convinced that moving to England was the right decision, he admitted that leaving PSG was emotionally difficult. He described the atmosphere at his former club as a family environment where players had built something special together.
“Over there, it was a real family. We’d built something very special together […] But, ultimately, that’s just how football is.”
His comments reflect the mixed emotions involved in leaving a successful team. While he remains appreciative of his time in Paris, Barcola is now focused on making the most of his opportunity at Liverpool.
Barcola Has Made a Mixed Start at Liverpool
The winger has already delivered some promising moments since arriving at Anfield, although his performances have not yet translated into consistent Premier League goals.
Barcola scored a hat-trick in Liverpool’s Champions League match against LASK, demonstrating his attacking ability on the European stage. However, he is still waiting for his first Premier League goal, although he has registered two assists in the competition.
His early contribution suggests that he has the potential to become an important attacking option, but Liverpool will want to see greater consistency as the season progresses. The expectations are naturally high given the transfer fee involved and the attacking responsibility that comes with joining one of Europe’s leading clubs.
Barcola, however, believes supporters have not yet seen his best performances in a Liverpool shirt. He pointed to the importance of building an understanding with his new teammates, particularly when they are learning how to make the most of his strengths.
“No, I don’t think I’m at my best yet. You still haven’t seen the best version of me. We’re working with my teammates so they can make the most of my strengths. I think once we really develop that understanding, things will get much better,” he said.
Liverpool Need a Response After Arsenal Defeat
Barcola’s arrival comes at a challenging period for Liverpool, who suffered a disappointing 1-0 Premier League defeat against Arsenal in their previous league fixture.
The result has increased the importance of their upcoming matches as they look to regain momentum. Their immediate challenge is a Champions League meeting with Fenerbahce on Wednesday night, where Liverpool will aim to produce a stronger performance in European competition.
After the trip to Turkey, the Reds will return to domestic action with an away fixture against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
Both matches will provide Barcola with further opportunities to develop his understanding with his teammates and contribute to Liverpool’s attack. With two assists already in the Premier League and a Champions League hat-trick to his name, the Frenchman has shown glimpses of what he can offer.
Bradley Barcola Focused on Making His Own Mark at Anfield
For Barcola, the priority is not replacing Mohamed Salah or living up to comparisons with the Egyptian forward. He recognises Salah’s importance to Liverpool but wants his own performances to define his time at the club.
The winger also believes there is considerable room for improvement as he adapts to the Premier League and develops partnerships with his new teammates. His confidence suggests that he expects his contribution to grow as the season progresses.
With a major transfer fee attached to his arrival, scrutiny will remain part of life at Anfield. However, Barcola has made his position clear: he wants to contribute in his own way, improve with the team and create a legacy of his own at Liverpool rather than trying to become the next Mohamed Salah.
