Chennai Super Kings are preparing for a major coaching change after Stephen Fleming stepped down as head coach in July 2026. With the former New Zealand captain now taking charge of England’s Test side, CSK have begun the process of finding his successor ahead of the next IPL season.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has revealed that the franchise intends to appoint an overseas coach for the vacant position. The franchise is also expected to consult captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and former skipper MS Dhoni before making the final decision.
CSK Confirm Overseas Coach Will Replace Stephen Fleming
Fleming’s departure brings an end to a hugely successful coaching era at CSK. The New Zealand great had been associated with the franchise since 2009 and played a key role in establishing the team’s distinctive approach and long-term culture.
With Fleming now moving into a new international coaching role with England, CSK have started evaluating several candidates for one of the most important positions within the franchise.
Viswanathan confirmed that the next head coach will be an overseas candidate, narrowing down the profile of the person CSK are looking to appoint.
The CEO also revealed that the franchise has already received interest from several potential candidates. However, CSK are yet to begin making a final decision.
MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad to Have a Say
CSK are expected to take the opinions of key senior figures before appointing Fleming’s replacement. Viswanathan revealed that he and whole-time director Rupa Gurunath will discuss the coaching position with Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni.
The involvement of Dhoni could be particularly important given his long-standing relationship with CSK and his understanding of the franchise’s culture. Gaikwad, meanwhile, is now the team’s captain and will work closely with the incoming coach.
Viswanathan also indicated that the new coach could have an important role in shaping the squad for the future.
“We have not started applying our minds on this (signing players in a trade deal). First, we will have a coach. We have got calls from many interested candidates. We will sit and finalise,” Kasi said.
Brendon McCullum Emerges as Potential CSK Coaching Candidate
Brendon McCullum has emerged as one of the names linked with the vacant CSK head coach position. The former New Zealand captain already has considerable experience of the IPL and has previously worked as head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders.
McCullum’s coaching credentials have grown considerably since his IPL stint. He has also held major responsibilities in English cricket, making him an experienced candidate for a franchise looking to begin a new coaching era.
His aggressive approach to cricket and experience of working with international players could make him an attractive option for CSK. However, there has been no confirmation from the franchise that McCullum has been appointed or that he is the final choice.
Michael Hussey Also in the Race for CSK Head Coach Role
Another potential candidate is former Australia batter Michael Hussey. Hussey already has a strong connection with CSK and currently serves as the franchise’s batting coach.
His familiarity with the players, management structure and CSK’s established culture could work in his favour if the franchise decides to promote from within its existing coaching setup.
Hussey’s long association with the franchise also means that he understands the expectations surrounding CSK and the importance of maintaining continuity following Fleming’s departure.
New CSK Coach Could Influence Future Signings
The timing of the coaching appointment is particularly significant because CSK are also expected to make decisions regarding their squad ahead of the next IPL campaign.
Viswanathan indicated that the franchise wants to appoint the new coach before making major decisions about trades and future recruitment. This would allow the incoming head coach to have a say in the team’s playing requirements.
That approach could give the new coach an opportunity to identify areas that need strengthening and influence the type of players CSK target in the upcoming squad-building process.
CSK Begin New Era After Fleming’s Exit
Stephen Fleming’s departure represents one of the biggest changes for CSK in recent years. His long tenure helped create a stable coaching environment and contributed significantly to the franchise’s success in the IPL.
The appointment of his successor will therefore be closely watched, particularly because the new coach will inherit a team with a strong identity and high expectations.
With McCullum and Hussey among the potential names being discussed, CSK have several experienced options available. The final decision, however, will only come after the franchise completes its discussions with the leadership group.
For now, CSK’s priority is clear: appoint the right overseas head coach before turning their attention to trades and squad changes. The involvement of Dhoni and Gaikwad could also play a key role in determining the direction of the franchise’s next chapter.
