Faf du Plessis on Cameron Bancroft and the Sandpaper Gate Scandal

Faf du Plessis has revisited the infamous Sandpaper Gate scandal that rocked Australian Cricket during the 2018 Cape Town Test against South Africa.

The former South Africa captain recalled his reaction to Cameron Bancroft being caught attempting to alter the cricket ball with sandpaper and said he felt sympathy for the young batter, who faced intense criticism in the aftermath.

Bancroft was caught on camera using a piece of sandpaper in an attempt to change the condition of the ball during the Test match. The footage quickly spread around the world and triggered a major controversy.

Speaking on the Beyond the Boundary podcast with former South Africa pacer Vernon Philander, du Plessis said his immediate reaction was to feel sorry for Bancroft.

Du Plessis explained that Bancroft appeared unsure about what to do after being exposed and questioned the decision to carry out the act so visibly in front of television cameras.

Faf Questioned Australia’s Handling of the Scandal

According to du Plessis, the controversy became even bigger because of the way Cricket Australia and the Australian team communicated about the incident.

He recalled being surprised by the delay before Australia’s press conference and said the subsequent statement created further confusion because it initially suggested that the captain and coach were unaware of what had happened.

Du Plessis believed the situation could have been handled with greater clarity and less external pressure. He also criticised the involvement of political figures and the intense reaction from former Australian cricketers.

Steve Smith and David Warner Received Major Bans

The fallout resulted in significant punishments for Steve Smith, David Warner and Bancroft. Smith and Warner were each suspended for 12 months, while Bancroft received a nine-month suspension.

Smith and Warner were also removed from their leadership positions. Smith eventually returned to Australia’s leadership group as vice-captain, while Warner never went on to captain the national team in an official Test capacity.

Du Plessis said he reached out to Smith during the difficult period. He initially expected the controversy to last for perhaps a week or a month, but the punishments ultimately kept the players away from international cricket for a year.

Du Plessis Says He Sent Steve Smith a Message

The former South Africa captain revealed that he sent Smith a message after the scandal became public because he believed the Australian captain was taking responsibility for the actions of his team.

Du Plessis said he wanted Smith to know that he understood the difficult situation he was facing and felt that the captain should not have been forced to bear the entire burden of the incident.

He also expressed sympathy for Bancroft, describing him as a young player who appeared to have been caught in an extremely difficult situation.

Faf Believes Match-Fee Penalties Could Have Been Enough

Du Plessis also questioned whether lengthy suspensions were necessary. In his view, the International Cricket Council could have dealt with the matter through financial penalties rather than removing the players from cricket for such extended periods.

He argued that the incident could have been addressed through match-fee deductions and other disciplinary measures while allowing the players to continue playing.

Du Plessis further suggested that political involvement in sporting controversies can create additional pressure on governing bodies and potentially lead to punishments that go beyond what is necessary.
