Fernando Tatis Jr. was ejected after contesting a controversial running-lane ruling during the Padres’ dramatic extra-inning loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fernando Tatis Jr. ejection became one of the biggest talking points from the San Diego Padres’ game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. The three-time All-Star was thrown out after reacting angrily to a controversial ruling involving the MLB running lane at first base.

Tatis has been one of the Padres’ most important players since making his MLB debut in 2019. He is currently in the sixth year of the 14-year, $340 million contract extension he signed with San Diego in February 2021.

Despite another strong season, the star outfielder found himself at the center of a heated exchange with the umpires during the seventh inning.

Tatis came to the plate in the top of the seventh inning with two outs and nobody on base. Looking to create an opportunity for the Padres, he attempted to reach base by laying down a bunt.

Tampa Bay Rays reliever Cam Booser fielded the ball but made a throwing error while attempting to make the play at first base. Tatis appeared to reach second safely after the errant throw.

However, first-base umpire Cory Blaser ruled Tatis out because the Padres star had run inside the designated running lane while heading toward first base.

Why was Tatis called out?

The ruling was based on MLB’s running lane rule, which requires a batter-runner to remain within the designated lane during the final part of the run to first base, subject to specific exceptions.

Blaser determined that Tatis had violated the rule, resulting in an out despite the throwing error. The decision immediately frustrated the Padres star.

Tatis reacted by slamming his helmet, protective equipment and other gear onto the field. He then continued arguing with the officials as the situation became increasingly heated.

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Craig Stammen ejected

Padres manager Craig Stammen came onto the field to challenge the ruling and argued strongly with home plate umpire Tyler Jones.

Tatis also confronted the officials and appeared to express his disagreement by wagging his finger. The continued protest eventually resulted in both Tatis and Stammen being ejected from the game.

The ejection was only the second of Tatis’ MLB career. His previous ejection came on May 5, 2025, against the New York Yankees.

Padres suffer another painful loss against Rays

The incident became even more significant because San Diego eventually surrendered a game it appeared to have under control.

When Tatis was ejected, the Padres held a 3-1 lead over Tampa Bay. After losing the first two games of the series, San Diego appeared to be on course to avoid a sweep.

However, the Rays mounted a late comeback. A misplay by Padres outfielder Samad Taylor helped Tampa Bay tie the contest with a two-run home run in the ninth inning.

The Rays eventually completed the comeback with a 5-4 victory in extra innings, sweeping the Padres in the series.

San Diego will now travel to Great American Ball Park to begin its next series against the Cincinnati Reds. The Padres will be looking to put the disappointing sweep behind them and return to winning form.
