The FIFA World Cup 2026 has officially become the highest-scoring edition in tournament history. The record was broken during the United States’ final Group D clash against Turkey when defender Auston Trusty scored the tournament’s 173rd goal, eclipsing the previous all-time record of 172 goals set at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The scoring continued throughout the match, with Turkey defeating the United States 3-2, taking the overall tournament tally to 177 goals while the group stage was still underway.
Record Broken Faster Than Ever
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is the speed at which it was reached. The 2022 World Cup required all 64 matches to produce 172 goals, whereas the 2026 edition crossed that mark in just its 59th match.
The expanded tournament now features 48 teams and 104 matches, providing more opportunities for goals. However, the attacking approach adopted by many nations and the outstanding performances of elite forwards have also contributed significantly to the record-breaking tally.
Lionel Messi Tops Golden Boot Standings
Lionel Messi currently leads the Golden Boot race with five goals. The Argentina captain also registered the first World Cup hat-trick of his illustrious career during the group-stage victory over Algeria.
Close behind Messi are Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, and Vinicius Junior, who have each scored four goals. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has netted two goals and still has one group-stage fixture remaining.
FIFA President Reacts
FIFA president Gianni Infantino hailed the milestone, saying the new record highlights the tournament’s excitement and attacking quality.
“Surpassing the previous highest of 172 goals from Qatar underscores the excitement and attacking prowess that have already made the 2026 FIFA World Cup so unforgettable.”
More Records Could Follow
With the knockout stage yet to begin and nearly half of the tournament still remaining, the final goals tally is expected to rise significantly, setting a benchmark that future FIFA World Cups may find difficult to surpass.
