Mirra Andreeva’s Wimbledon 2026 campaign came to a stunning end on Wednesday as defending champion Barbora Krejcikova fought back from a set down to claim a thrilling 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory on Centre Court.
The highly anticipated clash between two Grand Slam champions delivered one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far. While Andreeva entered Wimbledon as one of the favorites after winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open, Krejcikova’s experience and grass-court expertise ultimately proved decisive.
Andreeva Starts Strong but Krejcikova Responds
The 19-year-old Russian made an impressive start, capturing the opening set 6-4 with aggressive baseline play and the confidence that carried her to Roland Garros glory earlier this year.
However, Krejcikova gradually found her rhythm in the second set. The Czech star mixed powerful groundstrokes with clever variations, forcing Andreeva into difficult positions and eventually leveling the contest with a hard-fought 7-5 set victory.
With momentum shifting in her favor, Krejcikova continued to apply pressure in the deciding set, showcasing the grass-court skills that helped her lift the Wimbledon title in 2025.
Andreeva Saves Six Match Points in Dramatic Final Set
Despite trailing late in the third set, Andreeva refused to surrender. Serving to stay in the match, she found herself down 0-40 and facing three match points.
The French Open champion produced an incredible display of resilience, fighting back to deuce and saving all three match points. She then survived three more match points during the same game, electrifying the Centre Court crowd with her determination and composure under pressure.
Although the teenager temporarily kept her Wimbledon hopes alive, Krejcikova remained focused and eventually closed out the victory after more than two hours of intense competition.
Krejcikova Praises Andreeva After Victory
Following the match, Krejcikova praised Andreeva’s talent and fighting spirit while reflecting on another memorable battle between the two players.
“What a match. I think this was the fifth time I’ve played Mirra, and it’s always been a huge battle. She’s such a young and unique player, and she has a bright future ahead of her,” Krejcikova said during her on-court interview.
“It was a very difficult match, but I’m really happy we were able to put on a great show. We kept fighting until the very last point. I’m extremely proud to have won on this beautiful Centre Court, the best court in the world,” she added.
What’s Next for Krejcikova?
The victory sends Krejcikova into the third round and improves her head-to-head record against Andreeva to 3-2. The defending champion will next face fellow Czech player Nikola Bartunkova, who has enjoyed an impressive run at the All England Club.
Meanwhile, Andreeva’s early exit marks one of the biggest upsets of Wimbledon 2026, ending the French Open champion’s hopes of adding a second consecutive Grand Slam title to her growing collection.
