George Kittle has provided an encouraging update on his recovery from Achilles surgery, revealing steady progress as he targets a return ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The San Francisco 49ers star missed the 2025 campaign due to the injury and is now focused on regaining full fitness.
Speaking on the New Heights Podcast, Kittle explained that his rehabilitation is progressing faster than expected, highlighting key milestones in his recovery process.
Kittle details rehab progress
“Rehab is going great,” Kittle said. “You know the Alter G treadmills that are like the anti-gravity stuff? I’m at 100% body weight, going at nine miles an hour, jogging. So, I think I’m ahead of schedule.”
He added that he has already started more advanced movement drills, signaling a positive step in his return to on-field activity.
“We just started our jumping series, doing some 1080 walks, some marching stuff, so we’re out there. I was in cleats for the first time yesterday. So, hey, we’re back on the field,” he said.
While the update is promising, Kittle acknowledged that full clearance for competitive action still requires time and caution. At this stage of the offseason, he emphasized that real progress will only be confirmed once he returns to full practice participation.
Positive signs but caution remains
Although Kittle feels ahead of schedule, medical experts and team staff are expected to continue managing his workload carefully to avoid setbacks. Achilles injuries are among the most challenging for NFL players, often requiring long recovery timelines and gradual reintegration.
The 49ers will be monitoring his progress closely as training camp approaches, with hopes that he can return to being a key offensive weapon in 2026.
Off-field observations during recovery
During his rehab period, Kittle has also been active on social media, commenting on NFL field conditions. He notably reacted to a soccer match held at SoFi Stadium, praising the natural grass surface and suggesting it could benefit players if used more widely.
“This grass looks great on Sofi’s field… wonder if we could get that all season,” he posted.
His comments came amid ongoing discussions about artificial turf and its potential link to lower-body injuries, including Achilles tears.
As Kittle continues his recovery, his focus remains firmly on returning to peak form and rejoining the 49ers for the upcoming season.
