India could face Cabo Verde in another high-profile international friendly on October 6, with the proposed fixture coming just three days after the Blue Tigers are scheduled to host Brazil in Kolkata.
According to reports, talks between the two football federations have progressed significantly, with Cabo Verde understood to have given verbal approval for the match. However, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is yet to formally announce the fixture.
India are scheduled to face five-time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on October 3. If the Cabo Verde fixture is finalised, Khalid Jamil’s side would face another team that competed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup within just 72 hours.
Kolkata and Kochi in contention to host Cabo Verde
Kolkata and Kochi have reportedly emerged as the two possible venues for the proposed October 6 friendly. A final decision is expected after the remaining formalities between the two federations are completed.
The match would provide India with another opportunity to test themselves against strong international opposition during an important period of preparation.
India are expected to begin their preparatory camp in Kolkata around September 21. The potential double-header against Brazil and Cabo Verde would make the October international window one of the most demanding periods of the year for the national team.
Cabo Verde emerged as one of the 2026 World Cup’s surprise teams
Cabo Verde would provide India with a particularly challenging opponent after their impressive campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The island nation, ranked 64th in the world according to the report, made its World Cup debut in 2026 and quickly attracted attention with a series of strong performances.
Cabo Verde went through the group stage without losing a match. They held Spain to a goalless draw, drew 2-2 with Uruguay and recorded another 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia.
Their memorable campaign eventually ended against defending champions Argentina in the knockout stage. Cabo Verde twice fought back before ultimately losing 3-2 after extra time.
Sidny Lopes Cabral’s goal against Argentina was later voted FIFA’s Goal of the Tournament, further highlighting the impact of Cabo Verde’s historic World Cup run.
Vozinha could be one of Cabo Verde’s key names
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha has been one of the recognisable figures associated with Cabo Verde football and could be part of the squad if the October friendly is confirmed.
The proposed India fixture would give Indian players an opportunity to compete against footballers who recently experienced the highest level of international competition at the World Cup.
Cabo Verde have appointed a new head coach
Cabo Verde will enter the potential fixture under a new coaching setup. Humberto Bettencourt has taken charge following the departure of Bubista.
Bettencourt previously worked as an assistant for six years and was part of the coaching staff during Cabo Verde’s historic World Cup campaign.
If the October 6 fixture goes ahead, it is expected to be the first senior men’s international meeting between India and Cabo Verde.
India seeking stronger opposition after ASEAN Cup withdrawal
The proposed friendly is part of the AIFF’s reported efforts to arrange high-quality international matches for India after the national team withdrew from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup.
India had initially been drawn alongside Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore in the competition. However, scheduling conflicts with the Brazil friendly led the federation to change its plans.
AIFF subsequently began exploring matches against teams that participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Cabo Verde and Iran reportedly among the teams considered.
Facing stronger opponents could provide India with valuable experience as the team looks to improve its competitiveness against higher-ranked international sides.
India could face four 2026 World Cup participants
The Brazil fixture has already been officially confirmed for October 3 in Kolkata, while India are also scheduled to travel to New Zealand for two friendlies in November.
If the Cabo Verde match is confirmed, India could therefore face four matches against teams that participated in the 2026 World Cup during the final months of the year: Brazil, Cabo Verde and New Zealand twice.
Such a schedule would give Khalid Jamil’s team a demanding series of tests and valuable preparation against international opposition with recent World Cup experience.
Cabo Verde friendly still awaits official confirmation
Despite the progress in negotiations, the India-Cabo Verde friendly has not yet been officially announced by the AIFF. The date and venue will be confirmed once the remaining formalities are completed.
For now, the October 3 Brazil clash remains India’s confirmed headline fixture, while the potential October 6 meeting with Cabo Verde could provide another major test for the Blue Tigers if the agreement is finalised.
