Ireland head coach Heinrich Malan resignation has become the latest major development in cricket after he decided to step away from his role following Ireland’s historic 2-0 T20I series victory over India.
Malan, who took charge of Ireland’s men’s team in 2022, announced his decision despite his contract being scheduled for renewal in early 2027. He believes the timing will allow a smooth transition before Ireland’s upcoming ODI assignments and preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup qualifiers.
During his tenure, Heinrich Malan helped Ireland achieve several memorable milestones. The team qualified for three consecutive T20 World Cups and recorded important victories against top cricketing nations including Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa.
Ireland also created history under Malan’s leadership by winning their first-ever Test match against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi and securing their first home Test victory against Zimbabwe in Belfast.
“On the field, we can look back with great pride on our historic T20 World Cup victory against England in Melbourne, our first-ever Test victory against Afghanistan and the historic T20 series win at home against India,” Malan said.
The announcement came shortly after Ireland shocked India in a two-match T20I series. The young Irish side defeated the reigning T20 World Cup champions 2-0, creating one of the biggest moments in Ireland cricket history.
Ireland stun India in historic T20I series
In the second T20I in Belfast, Ireland defended a challenging total and defeated India by just one run. Harry Tector’s important half-century and Benjamin Calitz’s quick finish helped Ireland post a competitive score.
Jai Moondra was the star with the ball, removing India’s top order and finishing the series as the leading wicket-taker. The left-arm pacer dismissed key batters including Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, putting India under pressure early.
Despite Tilak Varma’s resistance and a late effort from Harshit Rana, India fell short and suffered their first-ever T20I series defeat against Ireland.
Malan’s legacy with Ireland cricket
Heinrich Malan leaves the role after transforming Ireland into a competitive international team capable of challenging stronger nations. His period included World Cup qualification success, historic wins and the emergence of young talents.
With major tournaments ahead, Ireland will now look for a new head coach to continue the progress built during Malan’s successful tenure.
