Nathan MacKinnon recorded a goal and three assists to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a convincing 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night. The Avalanche recovered from an early two-goal deficit before producing a dominant offensive performance to secure the win on home ice.

Artturi Lehkonen scored twice for Colorado, while Gabriel Landeskog and T.J. Hughes also found the net. Martin Necas contributed three assists, Cale Makar recorded two assists, and goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 29 saves to help the Avalanche complete their comeback.

For Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust scored the team’s two goals. The Penguins have now recorded just one win, four regulation losses and one overtime loss in their last six games. Goaltender Arturs Silovs finished with 27 saves.

Avalanche Score Four Unanswered Goals to Defeat Penguins

The Colorado Avalanche took control of the game with a powerful second-period display, scoring three goals in the frame to establish a 4-2 advantage. Their attacking pressure proved too much for Pittsburgh after the Penguins had taken an early lead.

Lehkonen started the comeback just 25 seconds into the second period, tying the score at 2-2. After MacKinnon’s shot struck the goal post, Lehkonen knocked down the rebound with his glove and finished from the crease to score his second goal of the night.

Landeskog then gave Colorado its first lead of the contest at 4:24. The Avalanche captain capitalised on a pass from Brock Nelson, firing the puck into the open side of the net to make it 3-2.

Hughes extended the advantage with his first career NHL goal. With 5:03 remaining in the second period, he redirected MacKinnon’s pass into the net just four seconds after Colorado’s power play had expired, giving the Avalanche a two-goal cushion.

MacKinnon added another goal with 4:54 remaining, converting a power-play opportunity with a one-timer from just above the left faceoff circle. His strike completed Colorado’s run of five consecutive goals and put the home side firmly in control at 5-2.

Nathan MacKinnon Continues Strong Start to the Season

MacKinnon’s four-point performance underlined his importance to Colorado’s offence. The forward finished with one goal and three assists, playing a central role in the Avalanche’s comeback after Pittsburgh scored twice early in the first period.

Through eight games this season, MacKinnon has accumulated 16 points, including six goals and 10 assists. His consistent production has helped Colorado maintain its attacking threat, with his passing and finishing both proving decisive against the Penguins.

Necas also played a key role in the victory, recording three assists, while Makar contributed two assists. Their performances helped Colorado generate scoring opportunities and turn the contest around after a difficult opening period.

The victory was particularly notable because the Avalanche were playing their third game in four nights. Despite the demanding schedule, they responded impressively to Pittsburgh’s early advantage and took control through a decisive second-period scoring surge.

Penguins Take Early 2-0 Lead Against Colorado

Pittsburgh made a fast start, scoring twice within 29 seconds to put the Avalanche under pressure.

Malkin opened the scoring at 8:28 of the first period. After charging down the right wing and cutting across the slot, he managed to shoot while falling and beat Blackwood to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead.

Just 29 seconds later, Rust doubled Pittsburgh’s advantage. He redirected Sidney Crosby’s pass into the net during a two-on-one rush at 8:57, putting the visitors ahead 2-0.

Colorado responded with 8:59 remaining in the opening period. Lehkonen tipped in a pass from MacKinnon during a rush, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and giving the Avalanche a crucial foothold in the game.

That goal helped Colorado build momentum heading into the second period, where Lehkonen scored again to level the contest before Landeskog, Hughes and MacKinnon completed the turnaround.

Arturs Silovs Stops MacKinnon’s Penalty Shot

Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs produced an important save when he denied MacKinnon’s penalty-shot attempt in the second period. The stop came just 15 seconds before Landeskog scored the goal that put Colorado ahead for the first time.

Silovs finished the night with 27 saves, but the Avalanche continued to create dangerous opportunities as the game progressed. Colorado’s ability to convert its chances in the second period ultimately proved decisive.

At the other end, Blackwood made 29 saves as the Avalanche recovered from Pittsburgh’s quick start. His performance helped Colorado weather the early pressure and protect its lead after the comeback was complete.

Brett McLean Makes Coaching Debut for Avalanche

The game also marked the debut of new Avalanche assistant coach Brett McLean behind the bench. McLean joined Colorado’s coaching staff after Dave Hakstol departed to become the head coach at Arizona State.

Colorado celebrated McLean’s first game with an impressive 5-2 win, powered by MacKinnon’s four-point performance and Lehkonen’s two-goal contribution. The Avalanche’s response after falling behind demonstrated their offensive depth and ability to recover under pressure.

For Pittsburgh, the defeat extended a difficult run of results, with the Penguins managing just one win in their last six games. They will look to improve their defensive consistency and regain momentum after surrendering five consecutive goals in Colorado’s comeback victory.
