The race for the College Football Playoff has become increasingly unpredictable following a chaotic Week 7 that dramatically reshaped the national championship picture. Five of the top seven teams in the Associated Press poll suffered losses on Saturday, creating new opportunities for undefeated programs and raising fresh questions about which teams deserve the highest positions in the playoff rankings.
Among the biggest surprises is UCLA, which has gone from winning just three games last season to starting the current campaign 6-0. The Bruins have entered the top 10, although their position could change quickly as the schedule becomes more demanding. Their rise reflects a season in which established contenders have repeatedly stumbled and previously overlooked teams have seized opportunities.
Saturday’s results included second losses for Texas and Alabama, Georgia’s home defeat against Auburn, and Notre Dame’s first significant setback of the season against BYU. Meanwhile, Ohio State secured an important road victory over Indiana, and Miami survived a difficult double-overtime contest against Florida State to preserve its undefeated record.
With only two Saturdays remaining before the College Football Playoff selection committee releases its first official rankings on November 3, the national championship picture remains wide open. No team has established unquestionable superiority, leaving the committee with several difficult decisions involving undefeated records, strength of schedule, quality wins and damaging losses.
Based on the available results and the selection committee’s historical approach to evaluating teams, here is a projection of the College Football Playoff top 12 at the midpoint of the season, along with a projected bracket and the key factors that could determine each contender’s position.
Projected College Football Playoff Top 12 Rankings
- Miami Hurricanes (6-0)
- Ohio State Buckeyes (6-1)
- BYU Cougars (6-0)
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-1)
- Indiana Hoosiers (6-1)
- Georgia Bulldogs (6-1)
- Ole Miss Rebels (5-1)
- UCLA Bruins (6-0)
- Kentucky Wildcats (6-1)
- Tennessee Volunteers (6-1)
- Utah Utes (6-0)
- Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-0)
This projection reflects the balance between undefeated records and the quality of opponents faced. Miami, BYU, UCLA and Utah benefit from remaining unbeaten, while Ohio State earns a high position through its road victory over Indiana. Notre Dame remains in the top four despite losing to BYU, while Georgia, Ole Miss and Indiana face questions about their recent performances and remaining schedules.
Texas Tech rounds out the projected top 12, although its comparatively weak résumé could make it vulnerable to a highly ranked Group of Six program. Under the projected bracket, Boise State would occupy the final playoff position as the highest-ranked Group of Six champion.
1. Miami Hurricanes (6-0)
Why Miami could be No. 1
Miami has a strong case to occupy the top position after a weekend in which several leading contenders suffered damaging defeats. Georgia lost at home, Notre Dame fell to BYU, and Alabama and Texas both recorded their second losses of the season. Miami, meanwhile, maintained its undefeated record despite facing a difficult challenge from Florida State.
The Hurricanes needed double overtime to defeat their rivals, a result that exposed some weaknesses. Nevertheless, the victory kept them unbeaten, and their broader performance throughout the season remains impressive. Miami has recorded three road victories, including wins against ACC opponents Wake Forest and Clemson, both of which have winning records.
The September 18 victory over Wake Forest could become particularly important in the selection committee’s discussions. The Demon Deacons have won four consecutive games and could emerge as a contender to meet Miami again in the ACC Championship Game.
Miami has also demonstrated statistical dominance, winning every game by at least 13 points before its narrow decision against Florida State. That combination of an undefeated record, convincing victories and success away from home gives the Hurricanes a compelling argument for the top spot.
Why Miami could rank lower
The biggest concern is the quality of Miami’s schedule. Although the Hurricanes have several respectable victories, they do not yet possess a signature win comparable to Ohio State’s road triumph over Indiana.
Miami’s narrow escape against a Florida State team with four losses also raises questions about how the Hurricanes might perform against elite opposition. Their undefeated record is valuable, but the committee could decide that Ohio State has accomplished more against stronger competition.
What to know and toughest remaining game
Miami’s November 7 road game against Notre Dame could determine whether the Hurricanes maintain their position among the playoff’s leading contenders. The trip comes after another away game at North Carolina on Halloween, creating a demanding stretch of the schedule.
Even a loss to Notre Dame would not necessarily eliminate Miami from playoff contention. However, losing that game and failing to win the ACC Championship could leave the Hurricanes vulnerable, particularly if they finish with two losses against ranked opponents.
Toughest remaining game: November 7 at Notre Dame.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes (6-1)
Why Ohio State could be No. 2
Ohio State strengthened its playoff résumé with an important road victory over Indiana. The Buckeyes now have two top-25 road wins against Big Ten opponents and have won five consecutive games since their Week 2 loss to Texas.
The defeat against Texas initially created a difficult comparison between the two programs. However, Texas’ second loss of the season reduces the value of that head-to-head result when comparing the teams’ overall records.
Ohio State also benefits from having a victory over Indiana, a team that entered the matchup undefeated. That result gives the Buckeyes a stronger résumé than several other contenders and provides a clear argument for placing them near the top of the projected rankings.
Why Ohio State could rank lower
The victory over Indiana was far from comfortable. The Buckeyes survived a late scare when a potential game-winning touchdown reception by Indiana wide receiver Nick Marsh was ruled incomplete because he landed out of bounds.
Quarterback Julian Sayin also struggled with turnovers, throwing two interceptions for the second consecutive week. Ohio State’s earlier collapse against Texas looks less impressive in retrospect now that the Longhorns have suffered another defeat.
Miami’s undefeated record and strong performances could therefore give the Hurricanes an advantage, despite their comparatively weaker schedule.
Quarterback injury creates uncertainty
Ohio State’s playoff prospects could also depend on the health of Sayin, who is expected to miss several weeks after suffering an injury against Indiana, according to coach Ryan Day.
The Buckeyes turned to true freshman Luke Fahey late in the game. Fahey completed neither of his two pass attempts, but Ohio State’s defense preserved the team’s narrow 19-15 lead.
The selection committee is expected to consider injuries to important players, but Ohio State must still demonstrate that it can compete at a high level without its starting quarterback.
Toughest remaining game
The Buckeyes travel to USC on October 31 after a bye week. The matchup presents a significant challenge because the Trojans are a talented one-loss team with the potential to disrupt the Big Ten standings.
Toughest remaining game: October 31 at USC.
3. BYU Cougars (6-0)
Why BYU belongs in the top three
BYU delivered one of the weekend’s most important performances by defeating Notre Dame. The victory gives the Cougars a signature result that many of the other leading contenders still lack.
The result becomes even more significant when considered alongside Georgia’s defeat against Auburn and the second losses suffered by Alabama and Texas. BYU has combined an undefeated record with a victory against a nationally respected opponent, strengthening its position in the playoff discussion.
Quarterback Bear Bachmeier played a major role in the win. His performance showcased his ability to influence games in multiple ways, as he ran for two touchdowns, caught another touchdown and threw for a score while recording 224 passing yards and one interception.
His dual-threat ability gives BYU an offensive dimension that can trouble opposing defenses. The Cougars have also benefited from their consistency, with their undefeated record providing a strong foundation for a top-five ranking.
Why BYU could rank even higher
Some committee members could place BYU above Ohio State because the Cougars remain unbeaten and have a particularly impressive victory against Notre Dame.
Ohio State’s quarterback situation could also influence the comparison. With Sayin sidelined, the Buckeyes must prove that their offense can remain productive with Fahey or another quarterback taking responsibility.
BYU’s unbeaten record and recent performance could therefore give the Cougars a legitimate argument for the No. 2 position.
Big 12 implications and toughest remaining game
The Big 12 has three projected teams in the top 12, with BYU leading the conference’s playoff contenders. The league could potentially place multiple teams in the playoff if its strongest programs avoid accumulating additional losses.
BYU does not play Texas Tech during the regular season, but its November 7 road game against Utah will be crucial. The rivalry matchup could determine which team has the strongest claim to the Big 12 title race.
Toughest remaining game: November 7 at Utah.
4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-1)
Why Notre Dame could remain in the top four
Notre Dame’s loss to BYU was damaging, but it does not automatically remove the Fighting Irish from the playoff picture. The defeat came against an undefeated opponent on the road, which makes it more defensible than some of the other losses suffered by leading contenders.
The committee typically evaluates the circumstances surrounding defeats rather than treating every loss equally. Notre Dame’s setback against BYU could therefore be viewed more favorably than Georgia’s home defeat against an unranked Auburn team.
The Irish also benefit from the struggles of Alabama and Texas, both of which have now lost twice. Their recent defeats have created more room for Notre Dame to remain among the leading one-loss teams.
Why Notre Dame could fall
Notre Dame’s résumé lacks the depth needed to make its position completely secure. Its two wins against Power Four opponents with winning records are against Wisconsin and North Carolina.
The defense also struggled to contain BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier during the first half, when he completed 72% of his passes and helped the Cougars establish an 11-point advantage.
Notre Dame must show that the loss was an isolated setback rather than evidence of a broader problem against elite opposition.
Toughest remaining game
The Fighting Irish host Miami on November 7 in a matchup with major playoff implications. A victory would provide Notre Dame with a significant résumé boost and help offset the defeat against BYU.
A second loss, however, would leave the Irish having lost their two biggest games of the regular season. Unlike teams competing for conference championships, Notre Dame would not have a conference title opportunity to strengthen its case.
Toughest remaining game: November 7 vs. Miami.
5. Indiana Hoosiers (6-1)
Why Indiana remains a playoff contender
Indiana’s loss to Ohio State was disappointing, but the Hoosiers remain in the projected top five because of their defensive performance and the overall strength of the teams ahead of them.
The defeat came against a team that could finish among the committee’s top contenders, making it less damaging than Georgia’s loss to Auburn. Indiana’s defense has also been particularly effective, allowing just 12.9 points per game and limiting opponents throughout the season.
The Hoosiers have performed well against the run and have generally avoided the penalties and turnovers that can undermine otherwise competitive performances. Their defense also made life difficult for Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
However, Indiana’s résumé is not particularly deep. Before facing the Buckeyes, its strongest victories were against Northwestern and Nebraska, its only Power Four opponents with winning records.
Why Indiana could rank lower
The game against Ohio State exposed several weaknesses. Quarterback Josh Hoover completed 20 of 40 passes for one touchdown and lost a fumble, recording his first turnover of the season.
Indiana also made several uncharacteristic mistakes that prevented it from capitalising on opportunities against the Buckeyes. Without the victory, the Hoosiers lack the signature result needed to separate themselves from other one-loss contenders.
Toughest remaining game
Indiana hosts USC on November 14 in a matchup that could have major implications for its playoff chances. A defeat would leave the Hoosiers with losses against two of their most important opponents and could put their top-12 position in jeopardy.
Toughest remaining game: November 14 vs. USC.
6. Georgia Bulldogs (6-1)
Why Georgia could remain in the top six
Georgia suffered one of the weekend’s most damaging defeats, losing at home to Auburn. Despite the setback, the Bulldogs remain in the projected top six because their overall résumé includes a valuable victory against Alabama.
The committee has historically considered the quality of opponents when evaluating losses. Georgia’s defeat against Auburn is certainly damaging, but the Bulldogs could still receive credit for their stronger victories and their performance over the course of the season.
The problem is that Alabama’s second loss has reduced the value of Georgia’s earlier victory over the Crimson Tide. That result is now less persuasive than it would have been if Alabama had remained a one-loss contender.
Why Georgia could fall further
The Bulldogs have struggled with turnovers and discipline during their last two games. Three turnovers and costly penalties contributed to their defeat against Auburn, raising questions about whether the team is performing at the level expected of a national championship contender.
Georgia’s loss is also more concerning because it came at home against an opponent that was not expected to be among the leading playoff candidates.
Florida and Ole Miss could decide Georgia’s position
Georgia has a bye week before facing Florida on Halloween. That matchup could become particularly important if the Gators continue their recent progress.
Florida has already beaten Auburn on the road and defeated Ole Miss. If the Gators also defeat Georgia, the committee could have a stronger argument for placing a two-loss Florida team above a two-loss Georgia team, depending on the remaining results and comparative résumés.
The Bulldogs’ November 7 trip to Ole Miss will provide another important test. A victory would help Georgia recover from its recent setback, while another loss would make its playoff position significantly less secure.
Toughest remaining game: November 7 at Ole Miss.
7. Ole Miss Rebels (5-1)
Why Ole Miss remains in the top 12
Ole Miss moved up the projected rankings after Alabama suffered its second loss, but the Rebels also strengthened their résumé with a convincing 31-3 victory over Missouri.
The Rebels have another valuable result from their September 19 victory against LSU. Those performances give Ole Miss a stronger case than teams whose best wins have come against less accomplished opponents.
Ole Miss has shown that it can defeat quality opposition, but defensive inconsistency remains a concern. The Rebels are allowing 23.8 points per game, considerably more than Indiana and Georgia, both of which have held opponents to fewer than 16 points per contest.
Their September 26 loss to Florida is also a significant blemish. However, the committee could consider the circumstances surrounding that defeat, which followed an emotional game against former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin when he returned to Oxford with LSU.
Why Ole Miss could rank higher
The Rebels’ victories against Missouri and LSU could compare favorably with Indiana’s wins against Northwestern and Nebraska, as well as Georgia’s victories against Oklahoma and Alabama.
If the committee places greater emphasis on the quality of victories than on the number of losses alone, Ole Miss could move above Indiana or Georgia.
Toughest remaining game
Ole Miss begins a challenging stretch with a game against Texas before hosting Georgia on November 7. The Rebels will need to avoid further losses if they want to remain in a strong position for the playoff.
A second loss could also make the head-to-head comparison with Florida more relevant if both teams finish with similar records.
Toughest remaining game: November 7 vs. Georgia.
8. UCLA Bruins (6-0)
Why UCLA has climbed into the top 10
UCLA has emerged as one of the season’s most surprising stories. After winning just three games last season, the Bruins have opened the current campaign 6-0 and moved into the projected top 10.
Their unbeaten record has become increasingly valuable as established contenders have suffered defeats. UCLA also strengthened its position by beating Wisconsin on Saturday despite playing without starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
Backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach delivered a promising performance in his first start, completing 22 of 33 passes for 264 yards. The result was particularly important because Wisconsin has improved to a 4-2 record and provided a meaningful test for UCLA.
The Bruins also have three Power Four road victories, including a statement win against Oregon. That success away from home gives them a stronger résumé than their overall schedule might initially suggest.
Why UCLA could fall
Although UCLA continues to win, its offense has struggled to produce points against stronger competition. The Bruins have failed to score more than 17 points in each of their last two games.
Some of their impressive offensive statistics also came during consecutive games in which they scored at least 50 points against Purdue and Maryland. Those results contribute to their overall numbers but do not necessarily establish how they will perform against elite playoff contenders.
UCLA also lost the turnover battle against Wisconsin, throwing two interceptions. The Bruins will need to improve their ball security as the competition becomes more demanding.
Toughest remaining game
UCLA has upcoming home games against Michigan State and Nevada, two teams that have a combined 4-9 record in this projection’s scenario. Those games offer an opportunity to maintain an unbeaten record before the playoff rankings are released.
The most significant remaining challenge arrives on November 28 against USC. The rivalry game could become especially important if the Trojans remain in contention after a demanding schedule of their own.
Toughest remaining game: November 28 vs. USC.
9. Kentucky Wildcats (6-1)
Why Kentucky belongs in the playoff conversation
Kentucky has emerged as a serious playoff contender for the second consecutive week, moving into the projected top 10 after Alabama fell out of the top 12.
The Wildcats have won five consecutive games, including three road victories against SEC opponents. Their recent victory against Oklahoma was particularly valuable because the defense recorded four takeaways while allowing only one touchdown.
Kentucky’s schedule strength also helps distinguish the Wildcats from several other contenders. Their résumé has ranked among the country’s strongest in ESPN’s Strength of Record and strength-of-schedule metrics, providing evidence that their success has come against meaningful opposition.
The Wildcats also secured a double-digit victory against Texas A&M on the road. If the Aggies finish the season above .500, that result could continue to carry value in the committee’s evaluation.
Why Kentucky could rank lower
The biggest concern is Kentucky’s 45-17 loss to Alabama. Tennessee subsequently defeated Alabama convincingly, giving the Volunteers a direct comparison that could work against the Wildcats.
The committee could also question whether Kentucky has enough offensive firepower to compete with the highest-ranked teams. Its defensive success and schedule strength are important advantages, but the Wildcats must continue producing results against difficult opponents.
Toughest remaining game
Kentucky travels to Tennessee on November 7 in a matchup with significant playoff implications. The Volunteers have already beaten Alabama and could improve their standing with another strong performance.
A Kentucky victory would strengthen the Wildcats’ position and provide a valuable head-to-head result against another SEC contender.
Toughest remaining game: November 7 at Tennessee.
10. Tennessee Volunteers (6-1)
Why Tennessee is back in contention
Tennessee made an important statement by defeating Alabama 26-10, a result that helped the Volunteers return to the projected playoff rankings.
The defense was the biggest factor in the victory. Tennessee held Alabama scoreless for three quarters, forced four turnovers and limited the Crimson Tide to just two conversions on 13 third-down attempts.
The Volunteers have also benefited from their October 3 victory against Auburn. That result looks more impressive following Auburn’s upset of Georgia, giving Tennessee another useful comparison against a team that has defeated a leading contender.
Under first-year defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, Tennessee has shown the ability to disrupt opposing offenses and produce game-changing plays. If the defense maintains that standard, the Volunteers could remain competitive against the strongest teams in the country.
Why Tennessee could fall
Tennessee’s résumé still contains weaknesses. Its home loss to Texas looks less valuable now that the Longhorns have suffered a second defeat, while the victory against Georgia Tech has lost some significance following the Yellow Jackets’ decline to a 2-4 record.
Wins against Furman and Kennesaw State are also unlikely to impress the committee, particularly if other contenders can point to stronger victories.
The Volunteers’ opponents have a combined winning percentage of 54.8%, which could make their schedule less impressive than those of Kentucky and other SEC contenders.
Toughest remaining game
Tennessee hosts LSU on November 21 in what could become a crucial test. The Volunteers have other important games against Kentucky and additional conference opponents, but the LSU matchup may offer their most demanding late-season challenge.
Toughest remaining game: November 21 vs. LSU.
11. Utah Utes (6-0)
Why Utah remains in the top 12
Utah’s undefeated record keeps the Utes in the playoff conversation despite concerns about the quality of their schedule. Their narrow road victory against Colorado provided another Big 12 win, although Colorado’s 2-4 record limits the value of the result.
The Utes have yet to defeat a Big 12 opponent with a winning record or any team above .500 in this projection’s scenario. That lack of a signature victory makes Utah one of the most difficult teams to evaluate among the undefeated contenders.
Nevertheless, the Utes benefit from remaining unbeaten while several nationally prominent programs have accumulated multiple losses. Their record gives them an opportunity to strengthen their résumé with a major victory during the second half of the season.
Why Utah could rank higher
Utah could move above Tennessee or Kentucky if the committee decides that an undefeated record outweighs their stronger individual victories. Tennessee has lost to Texas, while Kentucky has suffered a heavy defeat against Alabama.
The Utes still have an opportunity to address concerns about their schedule, but they will need to defeat a higher-quality opponent to establish a convincing case for a better ranking.
Toughest remaining game
Utah hosts BYU on November 7 in a matchup that could determine the leading contender for the Big 12 title.
The rivalry game carries major implications for both the conference standings and the College Football Playoff. A Utah victory would provide the Utes with the signature result missing from their résumé, while a defeat could expose the limitations of their unbeaten record.
Toughest remaining game: November 7 vs. BYU.
12. Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-0)
Why Texas Tech completes the projected top 12
Texas Tech remains unbeaten after a dominant victory against Arizona State, allowing the Red Raiders to stay in the playoff conversation.
Their position has also benefited from Alabama’s second loss, which opened a place in the projected top 12. Texas Tech’s undefeated record gives the program an opportunity to remain in contention as the season progresses.
However, the Red Raiders have not yet established themselves as the strongest team in the Big 12. Their best victory is a home win against Houston, the only Power Four opponent with a winning record that they have defeated.
That résumé leaves Texas Tech vulnerable to teams with more impressive wins, even if those programs have suffered a loss.
Why Texas Tech could fall out
Schedule strength is a major concern, but the Red Raiders’ offensive efficiency also raises questions. Quarterback Will Hammond has recorded six passing touchdowns and five interceptions, a ratio that could become problematic against stronger defenses.
Texas Tech has not consistently demonstrated the offensive dominance needed to justify a higher ranking. While its unbeaten record is valuable, the committee could prefer a team with a more challenging schedule and a stronger collection of victories.
Toughest remaining game
Texas Tech travels to Oklahoma State on November 14. The Red Raiders do not face BYU or Utah during the regular season, making the trip to Stillwater one of their most important remaining opportunities to strengthen their résumé.
Even if Texas Tech remains unbeaten, its final position could depend on how other contenders perform and whether a highly ranked Group of Six champion earns a place in the bracket.
Toughest remaining game: November 14 at Oklahoma State.
Projected College Football Playoff Bracket
Under this projection, the four highest-ranked conference champions and Notre Dame occupy the top four positions, with the bracket following the supplied midseason scenario. Miami, Ohio State, BYU and Notre Dame receive first-round byes, while the remaining teams compete in the opening round.
The highest-ranked Group of Six champion, projected here as Boise State, takes the No. 12 seed. Because the playoff field and seeding depend on the committee’s final rankings and conference championship results, these matchups should be viewed as a midseason projection rather than a confirmed bracket.
First-round byes
- No. 1 Miami Hurricanes: Projected ACC champion.
- No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes: Projected Big Ten champion.
- No. 3 BYU Cougars: Projected Big 12 champion.
- No. 4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Projected fourth seed.
These teams would advance directly to the quarterfinals, giving them additional preparation time and avoiding the physical demands of an opening-round game.
Projected first-round games
Dates: December 18 and 19, with games hosted on campus.
- No. 12 Boise State at No. 5 Indiana: Indiana would host the highest-ranked Group of Six champion in the projected opening round.
- No. 11 Utah at No. 6 Georgia: Georgia would host Utah in a matchup between an SEC contender and an unbeaten Big 12 team.
- No. 10 Tennessee at No. 7 Ole Miss: The all-SEC matchup would give both teams an opportunity to strengthen their championship credentials.
- No. 9 Kentucky at No. 8 UCLA: Kentucky’s schedule strength and defensive production would be tested against UCLA’s undefeated record and improving offense.
Projected quarterfinal matchups
The quarterfinals would be played in the major bowl games scheduled for December 30 and January 1. Under the projected bracket, the matchups would be as follows:
- Vrbo Fiesta Bowl: No. 12 Boise State or No. 5 Indiana vs. No. 4 Notre Dame.
- Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl: No. 11 Utah or No. 6 Georgia vs. No. 3 BYU.
- Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: No. 10 Tennessee or No. 7 Ole Miss vs. No. 2 Ohio State.
- Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential: No. 9 Kentucky or No. 8 UCLA vs. No. 1 Miami.
These matchups would create several compelling possibilities. Notre Dame could face a difficult challenge against Indiana or Boise State, while a Utah-Georgia winner would meet BYU in a game with major implications for the Big 12 and SEC. Ohio State would potentially face an SEC opponent, and Miami could encounter either Kentucky or UCLA.
What the Midseason Playoff Picture Tells Us
Week 7 demonstrated how quickly the College Football Playoff race can change. Five of the top seven teams in the AP poll lost on the same Saturday, producing an unusually dramatic reshuffling of the national rankings and opening the door for teams that had previously been outside the championship conversation.
Miami benefits most from the latest results because the Hurricanes remain undefeated and have avoided a major setback. Ohio State also strengthened its position with a valuable road win against Indiana, while BYU delivered one of the weekend’s most convincing performances by defeating Notre Dame.
UCLA is another major storyline. The Bruins’ 6-0 start represents a significant turnaround from last season, but their remaining schedule will determine whether they can maintain their place among the country’s leading teams.
Meanwhile, Georgia, Indiana and Ole Miss must respond to different challenges. Georgia needs to recover from a damaging home defeat, Indiana must prove it can compete with the strongest opponents, and Ole Miss must address defensive inconsistencies while continuing to collect quality wins.
The Big 12 could also become one of the most important conferences in the playoff race. BYU, Utah and Texas Tech are all projected in the top 12, but their schedules and head-to-head opportunities differ considerably. BYU and Utah will meet in November, while Texas Tech will have to build its case through other conference games.
The selection committee’s first official ranking on November 3 should provide a clearer picture of how these competing factors are being evaluated. Until then, undefeated records, strength of schedule, head-to-head results and performances against ranked opponents will continue to shape the debate.
For now, Miami holds the projected No. 1 spot, but its position is far from secure. Ohio State has the strongest recent road victory among the leading contenders, BYU owns a major win against Notre Dame, and several other programs remain capable of making a decisive move.
With important conference games still ahead, the midseason rankings are only a snapshot of an unpredictable season. The next few weeks could produce further upsets, reshape the projected bracket and determine which teams enter November with the strongest claims to a place in the College Football Playoff.
