Rain remains a major concern ahead of Sunday’s Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway, despite NASCAR’s decision to move the race start forward by two hours in an effort to avoid severe weather.
The NASCAR Cup Series event was originally scheduled to begin shortly after 3:00 p.m. ET. However, NASCAR and Prime Video agreed to an earlier start time to improve the chances of completing the full 400-mile race before heavier storms arrive in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.
Pocono Raceway has experienced numerous weather-related disruptions over the years, making forecast conditions a significant talking point heading into race day.
Weather Forecast Raises Concerns
According to weather projections, temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 70s, with cloudy skies covering the area throughout much of the afternoon. Forecasts also indicate thunderstorms could develop between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., with additional rain chances later in the evening.
FOX Sports reporter Bob Pockrass shared an update from the track regarding current conditions and nearby radar activity.
“It has been hot here. Hard to know if any of these small/light cells nearby to the west will have any significant drizzle/rain for Pocono.”
While no major rainfall had arrived at the speedway at the time of the update, NASCAR officials continue to monitor weather patterns closely.
NASCAR’s Race Cutoff Rules Explained
NASCAR has established 8:25 p.m. ET as the latest possible time for the race to continue.
If the event is still underway at that point, the next time the race leader crosses the start-finish line, the white flag will be displayed, signaling the final lap. One lap later, the checkered flag will end the race without any overtime attempts.
The procedure is designed to ensure the event reaches a conclusion before worsening weather or darkness creates unsafe racing conditions.
Denny Hamlin Claims Pole Position
Denny Hamlin secured pole position after delivering the fastest lap during qualifying on Saturday. His lap time of 51.948 seconds earned him the 51st pole of his NASCAR Cup Series career and his sixth pole at Pocono Raceway.
Kyle Larson will start alongside Hamlin on the front row after missing the top spot by just 0.055 seconds.
The top five starters for the Great American Getaway 400 are:
- Denny Hamlin
- Kyle Larson
- Daniel Suarez
- Ty Gibbs
- Chase Briscoe
Chris Buescher, Erik Jones, John Hunter Nemechek, William Byron, and Ryan Blaney complete the top ten starting positions.
Larson and Dye Penalized After Inspection Issues
Kyle Larson’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and Daniel Dye’s No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet both failed pre-race inspection twice before eventually passing on their third attempts.
As a result, NASCAR issued penalties to both teams, stripping them of their pit stall selections for Sunday’s race.
Meanwhile, Bubba Wallace and Carson Hocevar endured difficult qualifying sessions after separate incidents around the track, leaving both drivers with challenging starting positions heading into race day.
With weather uncertainty hanging over the event and several championship contenders starting near the front, the Great American Getaway 400 promises plenty of drama at Pocono Raceway.
