Joey Logano has described NASCAR’s modern safety measures as a major success after Christopher Bell escaped serious injury following a frightening 63G crash at Michigan International Speedway.

The impact, which NASCAR confirmed as the most severe recorded crash of the Next Gen era, left Bell with a fractured wrist but spared him from potentially life-threatening injuries. The incident immediately sparked discussion throughout the NASCAR garage regarding vehicle safety and driver protection.

Speaking with reporter Bob Pockrass, Logano praised NASCAR’s commitment to studying major impacts and continuously improving safety standards.

“The point of it, NASCAR does a good job at giving reports and such any time it’s a hit that big. Being part of the council, that’s important for what we do, to try to understand where the weaknesses are and how can we make it better for everybody.”

Logano Calls the Outcome a Safety Success

Although Bell suffered a fractured wrist in the crash, Logano believes the outcome demonstrates how effective modern NASCAR safety systems have become.

“I would say it’s a success. I know he hurt his wrist, but all things considered, as hard as he hit, I think we’d probably call that a success from the safety standpoint. I credit his team for building the car, so yeah, we’re happy that’s all it was,” Logano said.

The Team Penske driver noted that the containment systems, safety barriers, and structural integrity of the Next Gen chassis performed exactly as intended during the violent impact.

Team Penske Searching for Answers During Difficult Season

Away from safety discussions, Logano also opened up about Team Penske’s efforts to improve performance during a challenging 2026 NASCAR Cup Series campaign.

The No. 22 driver revealed that Penske continues to operate with an “open notebook” philosophy, allowing teammates to freely share data and setup information in pursuit of better results.

“Yeah, I mean it’s an open notebook. We all look at each other’s stuff. Ryan Blaney is an incredible race car driver. He’s probably the best driver on the racetrack in my opinion. He’s always been really, really fast,” Logano explained.

Logano specifically highlighted teammate Ryan Blaney’s consistency and ability to put together complete race weekends as a benchmark for the organization.

Focused on Returning to Victory Lane

Despite experimenting with various setup approaches throughout the season, Logano emphasized that results remain the ultimate priority.

“We’ve all tried every setup approach we could try at this point. We just want to win. We don’t care if it’s my way, his way, or what the 12 is doing,” he added.

After 15 races, Logano has recorded two top-five finishes and five top-10 results, leaving him 17th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings. Meanwhile, teammate Ryan Blaney sits third in the championship standings and already owns a victory this season.

As the season progresses, Team Penske will hope its collaborative approach can help Logano regain momentum while NASCAR continues to evaluate and strengthen the safety systems that helped Christopher Bell survive one of the hardest crashes in modern stock car racing.
