Ryan Cook has stepped down as head coach of the Netherlands men’s cricket team with immediate effect, bringing an end to a successful four-year stint that helped elevate Dutch cricket on the international stage.
The Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) confirmed Cook’s departure on June 25, 2026, citing personal reasons following the birth of his second child with partner Emma. Former South Africa international Heino Kuhn, who served as batting coach under Cook, will take charge of the team on an interim basis for the upcoming Cricket World Cup League 2 fixtures.
Ryan Cook Reflects on His Netherlands Journey
In a statement released by the KNCB, Cook described his time with the Dutch side as one of the most rewarding experiences of his coaching career.
“Coaching the Dutch men’s team has without a shadow of a doubt been one of the highlights of my coaching career so far. It’s been an absolute pleasure to lead the journey towards professionalism and creating a competitive cricket team with strong values.”
Cook added that the demands of the role required full commitment and presence, something he felt he could no longer provide at this stage of his personal life.
“The KNCB and the team deserve someone who can give the job the full, sustained focus and presence it now requires. I know that the foundations are strong and the future is bright.”
Transforming Dutch Cricket
Cook took over as Netherlands head coach in May 2022 and quickly made a significant impact on the national setup. Under his leadership, the Dutch side qualified for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, where they famously defeated South Africa and Zimbabwe.
His biggest achievement came with qualification for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India, marking the Netherlands’ first appearance at the tournament since 2011. Despite finishing at the bottom of the standings, the Dutch earned global praise after memorable victories over South Africa and Bangladesh.
KNCB Pays Tribute to Cook
KNCB Chief Executive Huib van Walsem praised Cook’s contribution to Dutch cricket, highlighting his role in strengthening player development and team culture.
“Ryan Cook has had an enormous impact on the entire system of Dutch cricket, building the depth of players, a strong team culture, coaching development and contributions to grassroots cricket. We are grateful for his wonderful efforts that have brought great results.”
Scott Edwards Thanks Departing Coach
Netherlands captain Scott Edwards also paid tribute to Cook, crediting him for helping shape the team’s modern identity.
“Ryan has been instrumental in the growth of this team and Dutch cricket as a whole over the past four years. His passion, professionalism and commitment to creating a strong culture have helped us achieve some memorable performances and set this team up for future success.”
“On behalf of the players, I want to thank Ryan for everything he has done for us and wish him and his family all the very best for the future,” Edwards added.
What’s Next for Netherlands?
Former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Heino Kuhn will temporarily lead the side as interim head coach. The Netherlands currently sit third in the Cricket World Cup League 2 standings with 32 points from 28 matches, trailing only the USA and Scotland.
With a strong foundation in place and qualification ambitions still intact, the Dutch team will look to continue its upward trajectory under new leadership while building on the success achieved during Ryan Cook’s tenure.
