
Ryan Mendes FIFA World Cup investigation has become one of the biggest off-field talking points of the tournament after reports claimed that the Cape Verde captain is facing a police probe during the team’s historic World Cup campaign.
The 36-year-old winger, who has featured in all three of Cape Verde’s matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, is reportedly being investigated over allegations linked to an incident that allegedly took place during the team’s tour of New Zealand in March.
Allegations against Ryan Mendes under investigation
According to reports from Brazilian outlet Globo, a translator working with the Cape Verde team during their New Zealand trip filed a complaint with police after an alleged incident in Auckland on March 27.
The report stated that the woman made allegations against Mendes and that medical documents were submitted as part of the investigation process. A forensic examination was also reportedly carried out.
New Zealand Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing but have not publicly identified the individual involved, citing privacy rules.
FIFA responds to Ryan Mendes case
The alleged incident was brought to the attention of both the Cape Verde Football Federation and FIFA. Reports claimed a request was made for Mendes to be restricted from playing during the World Cup while the matter was being examined.
FIFA said it takes allegations of misconduct seriously and confirmed that it is in contact with New Zealand authorities.
“FIFA takes any allegation of misconduct extremely seriously and has a clear process for anyone in football who wants to report an incident.”
The governing body added that independent judicial bodies generally do not comment publicly on ongoing investigations or allegations.
Cape Verde’s historic World Cup journey continues
The investigation comes at a significant moment for Cape Verde, who are making their debut at the FIFA World Cup. The team impressed in the group stage, finishing second behind Spain after drawing all three matches against strong opponents.
Cape Verde have now qualified for the knockout stage and are scheduled to face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32 on July 3.
No charges announced as investigation continues
As of now, no public charges have been announced against Ryan Mendes. The matter remains under investigation, and authorities have not released further details.
