India spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has dismissed concerns over Kuldeep Yadav‘s form ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka, insisting that the wrist-spinner did not do anything wrong in the series opener in Galle.

Kuldeep managed only one wicket across the two innings of the first Test, which led to questions about his place in the playing XI for the Colombo Test and speculation over a possible debut for Saransh Jain.

Sairaj Bahutule Defends Kuldeep Yadav’s Performance

Bahutule explained that Kuldeep’s role in the first Test was largely determined by the changing nature of the pitch. According to the spin bowling coach, the surface became slower as the match progressed, requiring the bowler to adjust his approach.

Kuldeep was also seen bowling with a flatter trajectory than usual at different stages of the Test. Bahutule viewed this as a tactical adjustment rather than a sign that the spinner had lost his rhythm or effectiveness.

“He was playing his role. Each bowler has his own strengths. He was operating as a wrist-spinner in a way, where obviously the wicket got slower and slower each day. But I’m sure he was bowling the way he normally bowls,” Bahutule said at the pre-match press conference.

Why Kuldeep Bowled Flatter in Galle

Kuldeep is traditionally known for generating turn through flight, variation and changes in trajectory. However, the changing conditions in Galle required him to vary his pace, release point and trajectory.

Bahutule indicated that the Indian coaching staff was satisfied with Kuldeep’s willingness to experiment according to the match situation. Rather than sticking rigidly to one method, the spinner adapted his bowling to the slower surface.

Although his one-wicket return was below his usual impact, the coaching staff does not appear to view the performance as evidence of a major technical problem.

Will Saransh Jain Replace Kuldeep Yadav?

Kuldeep’s modest returns in Galle have naturally created speculation about Saransh Jain’s chances of making his Test debut in Colombo.

Jain has been part of India’s preparations and could provide another spin option if the team decides to change its combination. However, Bahutule’s strong defence of Kuldeep suggests that the wrist-spinner remains firmly in India’s plans.

The final decision will depend on the pitch conditions in Colombo, team balance and India’s assessment of the bowling combination required to complete a series sweep.

Sairaj Bahutule Praises Manav Suthar

While discussing India’s spin options, Bahutule also praised young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar for his progress and performance in the opening Test.

Suthar’s extensive Ranji Trophy experience has helped him develop a strong understanding of his bowling. Bahutule explained that India’s focus with the youngster is now more on tactical awareness than making major technical changes.

The coaching staff wants Suthar to become better at reading pitch conditions, understanding batter matchups and adjusting his field plans according to different situations.

Manav Suthar Delivers a 10-Wicket Match Haul

Suthar produced a major impact in the first Test, claiming a sensational 10-wicket match haul as India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in Galle.

His performance, alongside Devdutt Padikkal’s first-innings 167, played an important role in India’s commanding victory.

Bahutule also highlighted Suthar’s consistency, trajectory control, seam position and ability to generate natural revolutions while maintaining an accurate length.

India Prepare for Second Test in Colombo

The second and final Test between Sri Lanka and India will begin on August 23 in Colombo. India currently lead the series 1-0 after their convincing victory in Galle.

With the series on the line, India’s selection of Kuldeep Yadav, Saransh Jain and Manav Suthar will be closely watched. For Kuldeep, the Colombo Test could provide an opportunity to respond on the field after a relatively quiet opening game.
