Kuldeep Yadav India Playing XI: Dodda Ganesh Urges India to Pick Spinner

Kuldeep Yadav India playing XI has become a major talking point ahead of the opening Test against Sri Lanka, with former India pacer Dodda Ganesh urging the team management to stop prioritising batting depth over the wrist-spinner’s inclusion.

India will begin their Sri Lanka tour with the first Test at the Galle International Stadium on Saturday, August 15. With spin expected to play an important role in Sri Lankan conditions, the selection of the bowling combination has attracted considerable attention.

Dodda Ganesh Wants Kuldeep Yadav in India’s Playing XI

Dodda Ganesh believes Kuldeep Yadav deserves an opportunity in the first Test after repeatedly being overlooked in overseas conditions.

The former India cricketer argued that India should not continue experimenting with the team combination simply to add batting depth. He shared his opinion on X ahead of the Galle Test.

“For heavens sake play Kuldeep. Enough of your experiments in extending batting depth #SLvIND,” Ganesh wrote.

The comments come after Kuldeep has spent significant periods on the sidelines during India’s recent overseas Test assignments.

Kuldeep’s Long Wait for an Away Test

Kuldeep has faced strong competition for a place in India’s Test XI, particularly when the team management has preferred additional all-rounders who can contribute with both bat and ball.

The left-arm wrist-spinner did not feature in India’s five-Test series against England last year. More notably, his last appearance in an away Test came against Bangladesh in Chattogram in December 2022.

His prolonged absence from overseas Tests has made his selection for the Sri Lanka series an important discussion point, particularly given the spin-friendly reputation of Galle.

Kuldeep Yadav’s Record in Sri Lanka

Kuldeep has limited Test experience in Sri Lanka. He has played only one Test on Sri Lankan soil, featuring in the third Test of India’s 2017 tour.

In that match, Kuldeep made an impact with the ball, claiming five wickets across Sri Lanka’s two innings. His ability to generate variation and turn could make him a valuable option if the Galle surface offers assistance to spinners.

Ravichandran Ashwin Also Wants India to Back Kuldeep

Ganesh is not the only former India cricketer calling for greater backing of Kuldeep Yadav. Indian spin great Ravichandran Ashwin has also suggested that the wrist-spinner should receive a consistent opportunity during the Sri Lanka series.

Ashwin believes Kuldeep should be given the chance to play both Tests rather than being judged after a single appearance. He also stressed that the captain and coaching staff need to support the spinner.

“You have to give Kuldeep a chance. He deserves the chance to succeed or fail. Give him both games and then decide. He has the skill and ability,” Ashwin said.

Ashwin also argued against selecting four specialist spinners simply because the pitch is expected to turn.

He suggested that India could select either Kuldeep or Saransh Jain alongside the other members of the bowling attack, rather than automatically choosing four spin options.

Why Kuldeep Could Be Important in Galle

Galle has traditionally provided conditions in which spinners can become increasingly influential as a Test progresses. Kuldeep’s left-arm wrist-spin gives India a different style of bowling compared with conventional finger spinners.

His variations can also create problems for batters who are looking to play long innings on turning surfaces. However, his selection would depend on India’s preferred balance between specialist bowling strength and batting depth.

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test

The first Test of India’s Sri Lanka tour will begin at the Galle International Stadium on Saturday, August 15. Shubman Gill will lead the Indian side, with the team management now facing an important selection decision over its spin combination.

Whether India follows Ganesh and Ashwin’s advice by giving Kuldeep Yadav an extended opportunity or opts for a batting-heavy combination will be one of the key selection questions before the Galle Test begins.
