Morne Morkel Addresses Sledging and Heated Exchanges in Colombo Test

Morne Morkel has addressed the heated exchanges between India and Sri Lanka during the second Test in Colombo, saying the intense heat and humidity can sometimes contribute to players losing their composure.

The ongoing Test has already witnessed several tense moments between players from both teams. Three players have faced disciplinary action from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for separate incidents during the match.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando Fined by ICC

The first major altercation occurred on Day 1 when India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando became involved in a heated exchange.

Fernando said something towards Jaiswal after dismissing him, prompting the Indian opener to return for a confrontation. Both players were subsequently fined 25 percent of their match fees and received one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.

Prabath Jayasuriya Also Reprimanded

Another incident occurred on Day 2 when Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya showed his frustration after a review went against his team. The spinner was reprimanded by the ICC following the incident.

Sledging remained part of the contest on Day 3, with India’s substitute fielder Sarfaraz Khan involved in exchanges with Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Niroshan Dickwella.

Morne Morkel Defends Competitive Banter

Speaking after the third day’s play, Morkel acknowledged the competitive nature of the contest but emphasized that players still need to operate within the rules.

“I just think the heat and humidity sometimes get to the players there. Although we need to play under the code and respect the game, a bit of banter between the boys is always good to see. It will definitely bring out the fighting and competitive spirit in the game,” Morkel said.

Morkel’s comments underline India’s willingness to embrace the competitive side of Test cricket while maintaining the importance of discipline and respect for the sport.

Sri Lanka Fight Back After India Declare

India declared their first innings at 503/9, putting Sri Lanka under significant pressure. However, the hosts showed considerable resistance on Day 3 and finished the day at 265/8.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara played an important role with an 80-run innings, while Sonal Dinusha continued his impressive form by remaining unbeaten on 85 from 137 deliveries.

Dinusha received valuable support from the lower order. Keshara Nuwantha faced 74 deliveries for 18 runs, while Lahiru Kumara spent 50 balls at the crease for eight runs as Sri Lanka attempted to extend their innings.

Sri Lanka Need 39 More Runs to Avoid Follow-On

At the end of Day 3, Sri Lanka still needed 39 runs to avoid the follow-on, with two wickets remaining. India therefore remain in a strong position heading into the fourth day.

Morkel has not completely ruled out India enforcing the follow-on, although captain Shubman Gill could also choose to bat again and build an even larger lead.

Rain Could Influence India’s Strategy

Rain interruptions remain an important factor in Colombo. India are looking for a victory that could strengthen their position in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings, meaning the weather could have a major influence on Gill’s tactical decisions.

With Sri Lanka’s lower order continuing to resist and the match already producing several heated exchanges, the fourth day promises another intense battle between the two sides.
