Niroshan Dickwella, Sonal Dinusha Frustrate India After KL Rahul’s Costly Drop in Galle Test

Niroshan Dickwella and Sonal Dinusha staged a remarkable fightback for Sri Lanka on Day 3 of the first Test against India at the Galle International Stadium.

Sri Lanka were in serious trouble after losing five wickets for fewer than 100 runs, but their fortunes changed after KL Rahul dropped Dickwella at first slip. The missed opportunity proved extremely costly as Dickwella went on to score 80 runs and combined with Dinusha for a 146-run partnership.

KL Rahul’s Dropped Catch Proves Costly

India appeared to be in complete control after reducing Sri Lanka to 126/5 early in the second session. Manav Suthar then created another opportunity when Dickwella edged a delivery while batting on 20.

The ball travelled toward Rahul at first slip, but the India opener could not hold on to the catch. The wicketkeeper-batter immediately received a major reprieve.

Dickwella made India pay for the mistake. Instead of Sri Lanka potentially losing their sixth wicket, the left-hander went on to add another 60 runs and finished with 80 from 115 deliveries.

Dickwella and Dinusha Build 146-Run Partnership

The dropped chance gave Sri Lanka the opening they needed, and Dickwella joined forces with Dinusha to steady the innings.

Dickwella completed his 23rd Test half-century from 68 balls, while Dinusha reached his second Test fifty from 92 deliveries.

The pair refused to give India another opportunity during the second session. Sri Lanka went into the tea break at 215/5 without losing a wicket during the session.

Their partnership eventually reached 146 runs, putting Sri Lanka back into contention after their difficult start.

Prasidh Krishna Finally Breaks the Stand

India eventually found the breakthrough early in the third session when Prasidh Krishna dismissed Dickwella.

Dickwella attempted to continue his aggressive approach but failed to control an outside edge. The ball carried through to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, ending his important innings at 80.

It was another frustrating near-miss for Dickwella, who has now recorded 23 Test fifties without converting any of them into a century.

Sri Lanka Record Second-Highest Sixth-Wicket Stand Against India

The partnership between Dickwella and Dinusha was significant in Sri Lankan Test history.

Their 146-run sixth-wicket partnership is Sri Lanka’s second-highest stand for the sixth wicket against India in Test Cricket.

The record belongs to Mahela Jayawardene and Prasanna Jayawardene, who put together a massive 351-run partnership against India in Ahmedabad in 2009.

However, Dickwella and Dinusha’s effort has created a new record for Sri Lanka’s highest sixth-wicket partnership against India in home Tests.

Shubman Gill Takes Stunning Catch

India also produced a moment of brilliance in the field earlier in the day when captain Shubman Gill took an outstanding one-handed catch.

Gill dived sharply to his left at short extra cover to dismiss Kamindu Mendis off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav.

Despite that spectacular effort, India’s inability to capitalise on Rahul’s dropped catch allowed Sri Lanka to recover significantly.

Sri Lanka Fight Back in Galle

After losing half of their side for fewer than 100 runs, Sri Lanka looked vulnerable. However, Dickwella and Dinusha’s resistance changed the momentum of the contest.

Dickwella’s 80 and their 146-run partnership ensured that Sri Lanka remained firmly in the contest. After Dickwella’s dismissal, Sri Lanka reached 236/6 in the 62nd over.

With two days still remaining and weather conditions potentially influencing the game, neither side can afford to lose concentration. India’s bowlers will now be looking to finish the Sri Lankan innings quickly, while the hosts will hope to build on the platform created by Dickwella and Dinusha.
