ICC Punishes Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando After Colombo Test Altercation

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has punished India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando following their physical confrontation on Day 1 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Both players were fined 25% of their match fees and received one demerit point each after being found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

Why Were Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando Punished?

The incident occurred on the final ball of the 17th over when Fernando dismissed Jaiswal during India’s innings. The Sri Lankan pacer gave the Indian opener a send-off as Jaiswal began walking back towards the pavilion.

According to the report, something Fernando said prompted Jaiswal to return and confront the bowler. The situation escalated when Jaiswal made physical contact with Fernando before Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva intervened and helped calm the situation.

The ICC subsequently determined that both players had breached Article 2.12, which covers inappropriate physical contact with a player, support personnel, umpire, match referee, spectator or another person during an international match.

Both Players Accept ICC Sanctions

There was no requirement for a formal hearing because both Jaiswal and Fernando accepted the sanctions imposed by match referee Andy Pycroft.

As a result, each player received the same punishment: a 25% match-fee fine and one demerit point on their disciplinary record.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Breaks His Silence

Jaiswal later addressed the incident on social media after commentator Harsha Bhogle posted a video related to the confrontation.

The India opener indicated that viewers may not have known exactly what was said before judging his reaction. He also made it clear that he believes players should respond when an opponent crosses the line.

Jaiswal’s comments reflected the intensity of the moment, but the ICC’s decision made clear that physical contact during an international match can result in disciplinary action regardless of the circumstances that led to it.

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and Sri Lanka fast-bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk also discussed the confrontation after the opening day’s play.

Kotak acknowledged that the incident happened during an intense moment in the Test but felt that Jaiswal should not have moved towards Fernando after the dismissal.

Van Niekerk also described the confrontation as something that occurred in the heat of competitive Test cricket. However, he left the disciplinary matter to match referee Andy Pycroft and the official process.
