Welsh Fire delivered a statement performance in The Hundred Women’s competition, defeating MI London by 60 runs at Sophia Gardens. After suffering a narrow loss against Southern Brave in their opening fixture, Fire responded with an explosive batting display followed by a clinical bowling effort.

Led by brilliant contributions from Sophie Devine and Georgia Wareham, Welsh Fire posted a massive 177 for 4, the third-highest total in the history of the women’s Hundred competition. MI London struggled throughout their chase and were eventually bowled out for just 117.

After being asked to bat first, Welsh Fire started strongly through openers Georgia Voll and Ella McCaughan. The duo added 49 runs from 36 deliveries to provide the perfect foundation.

McCaughan scored 27 off 23 balls before falling to Hayley Matthews, while dangerous batter Freya Kemp was dismissed soon after following another run-out.

Voll continued attacking and played a crucial knock of 42 runs from 26 balls before being dismissed by Melie Kerr.

The turning point of the innings came when captain Sophie Devine joined forces with Georgia Wareham. The pair produced a breathtaking fourth-wicket partnership worth 79 runs from just 35 balls.

Devine showcased her power-hitting ability, smashing 52 runs from 29 deliveries, including two huge sixes against Hayley Matthews. She was dismissed in the final stages of the innings after a brilliant knock that shifted momentum completely in Fire’s favour.

Wareham continued the assault with an unbeaten 43 off only 20 balls, combining aggression with excellent shot selection. Em Arlott added further damage by hitting the final delivery of the innings for six, helping Fire reach a formidable total of 177.

MI London Collapse Under Welsh Fire Bowling Pressure

Chasing 178, MI London never looked comfortable against a disciplined Fire bowling attack. The visitors lost wickets regularly and failed to build any significant partnership.

Grace Potts was the standout bowler for Welsh Fire, dismantling MI London’s top order with figures of 3 for 24.

Chinelle Henry provided some resistance with a fighting 30-run knock, but her dismissal by Devine ended any realistic hopes of a comeback.

After the comprehensive win, Georgia Wareham praised the team’s all-round effort and expressed confidence about making their home ground a stronghold.
